Mekons - Horrorble - FLAC 24/48
My 2nd listen to the dub remix of the band’s 2025 album Horror (my first being a launch stream on Bandcamp). Tony Maimone has done a great job on this, the fantastic songs remixed sounding really good, good heavy dub lines. I’ll probably listen to the original more, but this is a fine addition to my Mekons collection.
The Bevis Frond - Horrorful Heights (2026). Having been reminded by @Premmyboy in another thread that I won’t be seeing them on tour this time, consoling myself with the latest offering from Nick Saloman and his crew. Guitartastic.
Biber
Mystery Sonatas (aka Rosary Sonatas)
Amandine Beyer, violin; Gli Incogniti as minimal backup
harmonia mundi 2023
I’m digging through my “listen later” queue from this thread, and Beyer/Biber was next up. Thank you to the member who posted this, and apologies that I did not note who you were for acknowledgement.
The Yuja Wang-ization of classical music [edit to add: classical music marketing] may or may not be something to be lamented, and if the strategy is good enough for Sabrina Carpenter, who am I to judge. That said, I do feel that if we are going to put Amandine Beyer in short shorts on her covers, we should do the same for the equally hot Klaus Makela and Vikingur Olafsson on theirs, if only to honor a broader range of classical-consuming demographics.
Beyer is a thoughtful and, as this album amply demonstrates, amazingly virtuosic artist. Biber doesn’t get much airplay – I think that the last time I listened to this piece, it was being marketed as the Rosary Sonatas, which tells you something – but he, Beyer, and this record are definitely worth a listen.
Thanks again to the member who posted this originally.
Very interesting find @seakayaker I’ll give it a listen
Do you know Renée Fleming’s “Christmas in New York” album? It also features guest stars Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Brad Meldhau, Rufus Wainwright, etc.
Maybe not the best recommendation in June however… ![]()

Understatement of the day!
I agree, they make an amazing pair, which is also true when he conducts the Academia Bizantina in her Bach violin concertos album

The prospect of dealing with her wardrobe must be terrible, I can only imagine. I join all others who have expresses their sympathies, @Cmax.

Re: Bryan Ferry Boys and Girls … check out just the guitar section from Wikipedia’s personnel listing:
-
Nile Rodgers – lead guitar (tracks 1, 3)
-
Neil Hubbard – lead guitar (track 2)
-
Keith Scott – lead guitar (track 2)
-
David Gilmour – lead guitar (tracks 5, 8)
-
Mark Knopfler – lead guitar (track 7)
“So, who plays lead?” “Nile Rogers, David Gilmour, and Mark Knopfler.” (And it’s not like Hubbard or Scott were getting kicked out of recording sessions, either.)
“Nice, but who did the engineering?” “Bob Clearmountain.”
You and @Isca_Dumnoniorum are dead right.
Incredible that this album is over 50 years old and sounds as fresh as if it had been recorded yesterday. Thanks for the reminder, FC.![]()
I’m not sure anyone’s figured out exactly what this great album’s all about. But it is intriguing.
Anyone who’s been pointed in the direction of Van Occupanther by this thread, should also hear Midlake’s other albums too. They’re all excellent, but I recommend starting with this:
Yep it’s a wonderful album. It baffles me why such a brilliant song writer as Nick is and with a tip top live band that they aren’t more famous. It’s pretty bonkers really.
I hadn’t heard of the album or artists until I bought it on Wednesday. The guy at my local record shop recommended it, he remembered I’d bought a Brazilian album a few weeks earlier. (Joyce).
It’s an unofficial 2024 Russian reissue, but it sounds OK.
I’m really enjoying it. Not what I expected, it’s so varied. From acoustic to rock.
Ryley
After a morning of assorted 70’s (used apostrophe as the music is of the 70 decade
) rock, listen into
It’s a landmark in Brazilian music after the future created by the Tropicalia movement of the late 60s.
Milton’s voice is just mesmerising and he has collaborated and influenced many in the jazz community as well. Brilliant album. Well done.
Listening to Ryley Walker - Primrose Green
A little more mellow after a morning of assorted 70’s rock (Sorry @HungryHalibut but the music is of the 70 decade so an apostrophe seems appropriate??)
It is, but in the correct place: ‘70s.
Isn’t it great at 60 that you can listen for the first time to an album that was released when you were 4. And what an album.
Ry Cooder from 1970.
