It’s interesting that you spell flavor as flavour in Canada? I went to the UK for postgrad and was forced to use British spelling for my thesis. ![]()
I used to consistently put [proper] Mexican and Thai food in my top 1 and 2 slots. There is a supreme art to combining hot flavours that do not mask other ingredients and most just fail at this. The creamy bitterness of chocolate chicken or tequila and paprika seared prawns is incredible.
I’ve travelled too much to be able to reliably rank cultural cuisines now.
Still, Mexican [not proper but cheap Tex-Mex] food is ultimate comfort food for me. Guaranteed taco or burrito night at least once a week in my childhood.
Since emigrating to the far east, my spicy go-to has become Korean food 2-3 times a week but probably just because decent Mexican is very hard to come by in these parts.
If someone held me at gunpoint and forced me to pick one cuisine to eat for the rest of my life, I think I’d pick Mexican. Not the same as saying it is my favourite, But easily the one I would get the least tired of eating every singe day.
I think there is a very good Mexican restaurant in Minato-ku, on a small narrow street, somewhere near the US embassy IIRC.
It’s not bad. I had a solo celebratory lunch there after I got rid of my US passport.
There is a very good one in Daikanyama. Taverna style. The best I had in Japan was when Tokyo Midtown opened. Very high end posh Mexican. I went a year later and it had changed hands and was just terrible beyond belief. There is a quite okay one in the JPMC building Marunouchi if you can stand eating with 100 drunk bankers. Still, they make the guacamole at the table and the portions are realistic.
I never make it to the mainland anymore now. Used to be a decent Mexican under Sapporo station run by this very strict Mexican lady, but that too has changed hands and is not what it once was. On this island, Mexican just means tacos and enchiladas and both I can do better at home.
Yes, everything has to be customized for the local taste, I can’t cook so I had to eat out every day for lunch and dinner. In general, I find Tokyo is a food heaven (for someone like me who can’t cook).
Nothing from this restaurant:
That sounds horrific, in a darkly hilarious kinda way…
Sketch from The Lecce Of Gentlemen perhaps…
‘We are a local restaurant…’
The best chicken restaurant in the world (seriously)
I’ve been to too many restaurants all over the world (!), but I have never tasted chicken so good in this restaurant.
This restaurant is in fact in Attinghausen, which is up in the hill, approx. 50 miles from Zürich.
Re: f!avour vs flavor.
The spelling practices in Canada are rather odd at times. Colour and flavour etc all have the u in them, but program doesn’t have the ‘me’ ending. I grew up in Canada in a very British household and my father converted to this spelling for business reasons I guess.
A very interesting read with a lot of amazing looking food. I guess there are no vegans here?! I have spent most of my life eating everything I could. I loved trying anything new and obscure but decided a while back I was going to try being vegan and its been very enjoyable so far. I started for environmental reasons but now feel absolutely no need to eat an animal or a product created from an animal for my consumption.
The only thing I possibly miss seeing this thread are Oysters & Scotch Eggs!
Vegan here too, Steve!
A while ago, I posted a pic of a splendid veggie burger and fries.
I went vegan 16+ years ago. It started as a way to bring down my very high level of cholesterol, and worked a treat. Like you, my reasons soon expanded. I’m sure that plant-based, or mainly plant-based, diets will one day be the norm in much of the world.
That is actually a very good idea. I am currently suffering the same health problem plus high-blood pressure.
Many a time, I’ve tried to be Vegan, mainly I really feel bad & guilty of eating meat, but then I always succumb to a good meal of steak. Maybe I will try again. ![]()
You don’t have to do it all at once. Maybe just ease your way in.
Peta has a helpful (and free) starter kit: click here.
There’s a great chicken restaurant in San Francisco called Zuni Cafe, went there a few years ago (2012) and loved it. Unfortunately the owner and chef passed away and when we managed to get back there in 2017 it wasn’t as good imo. However the place still rates well and apparently a bit of an institution even among locals.
Thanks @Pete_the_painter for the info, and this is interesting, but frankly speaking, I think no other restaurant in this world can server a better Chicken dish than this one in Attinghausen, I did not come to this restaurant as a tourist, in fact I was an expat in Switzerland for more than 5 years.
Wasn’t saying it was better and not having the pleasure of eating at the one you mentioned I wouldn’t dare say one was better than the other.
I was just highlighting other great chicken restaurants that are worth a visit.
Thanks again, got it.
