What are your favourite ten Jazz albums from 2024?

Jazz seem pretty popular on this forum, and I have discovered some great Jazz discs on this forum. So what are your top ten releases this year.

Here are mine

1 Top of the chart is a previously unknown to me, pianist from south Africa. Hearing Teardrop by Kyle Shephard from his “A dance More Sweetly Played” on the Gilles Peterson show stopped me in my tracks.

2 Jasmine Myra’s Rise up has slipped down to second place. An easy listen, but lovely arrangements and playing.

3 Lakecia benjamin, with Phoenix Reimagined is a nice stormy ride

4 Another new entry is Steve Coleman with PolyTropos,/ Of Many Turns

5 Ezra Collective: Dance No One’s Watching. A pretty standard choice.

6 Arron Parks: Little Big III

7 Walter Smith III: Three of Us Are From Houston and Reuben is Not

8 John Surman: Words Unspoken. John Surman and Rob Luft, two favourite artists.

9 Out of Into Motion 1, another new disc, which I am enjoying.

10 Kokoroko. This one grows on you.

The list could go on and on, there has been some great new Jazz this year.

A couple more that I forgot.

Ruth Goller’s Skyllumina for maximum strangeness.

Immanuel Wilkins. New, and still under review, but I love the way this guy plays

Ethan Iverson’s Technically Acceptable. Another player who’s way of hitting the keys is a standout.

We share only one, the last.
Hopefully we have all different tastes. Jazz word is vast.

@BertBird will probably follow with a different list.

So far all the lists are very different. Yes, the Jazz world is infinitely large.

Probably not the best cover of the year, but with honourable mentions for Arooj Aftab’s Night Reign, Total Blue and Nala Sinephro’s Endlessness, this live recording is probably my new jazz album of the year.

One of my favorites for me as well, what a wonderful album.
Nala I think is her name though

I wanted to add André 3000 - New Blue Sun but just found this was releases end of 2023.

Indeed! Sorry Nala. Her first album Space 1.8 is as good but not from 2024, so out of contention for this thread’s illustrious list

I like New Blue Sun too Andre 3000 plays flute on ‘I’ll Do Whatever I want’ a track on Shabaka Hutching’s last album which also features Carlos Nino who plays percussion on New Blue Sun.

Yeah will give it some thoughts but at least missing the splendid album of Avishai Cohen…

night reign is a fine jazz album but i feel in moving so far towards western jazz arooj aftab has lost much that made her break through album so unique, rich and strange

Agreed, that Jaco song is sweet. The bass on this album is great, very fresh overall!
