Bandcamp has come up quite a few times. I’ve only purchased music there and never really looked at as a place to check out new music. I’m looking forward to spending more time with it.

My music interests are mainly Contemporary Classical and Free/Avant-Garde Jazz. So for me, my music gatekeepers are mainly

  • ‘The Wire’ magazine (for avant-garde music across the spectrum) and,

  • ‘The Free Jazz Blog’.

  • I also look at the ‘I Care If You Listen’ blog (contemporary classical).

There’s all sorts of other sources as well such as Bandcamp, Roon and recently I’ve been looking through the old Rough Guide 100 classic CD’s books (the jazz one and the classical one in particular)

For modern composition there’s a great BBC podcast called Radio 3’s 50 Modern Classics.

It’s far too easy to find new music these days!!!

I would rather remove my gallbladder with a rusty spoon than use genAI to make music (or really any creative-field) recommendations for me.

Shazam to pick up the frequent soundtrack snippets played in many tv dramas & series. It’s amazingly accurate.

if you like a few years old music. Most of the training data has a cutoff-date a few years back but I think the most popular music charts are updated.

Mojo magazine… superb for discovery…
And to some extent Tidal… but is a lot more limited… and no narrative to whet your appetite.

Many of the above also apply for me but I don’t think anyone has mentioned Instagram. There are many good accounts on there that promote great new music, once you come across one you like you’ll get to see others. Most of my recent favourites have come from an account “Somewhere_Soul” that showcases new Jazz, Afrobeat, Soul and basically anything with a groove. If that’s your thing then a follow is highly recommended.

I am pretty new here, but I have picked up some good music by listening to recommendations here.

I have a couple of Jazz review sites that I follow: All about Jazz and Jazzwise. Chris May, my favourite reviewer on All about Jazz has recently passed away.

The guy where I have bought my CD’s for the past thirty years, often has some good suggestions.

I have just discovered the BBC radio app. Gilles Peterson plays some pretty cool music, and I have found a couple of new artists there.

I find using the Qobuz app or the Apple Music app on my iPhone starts playing all manner of wild things after my explicit choices are done.

There are some really cool pieces ‘they’ choose.

Twitter (I refuse to call it X) is interesting for bits and pieces like this (pictured). I have now favourited the album on Tidal in my list of things to get around to listening to. Not at all my primary genre of music.
