I occasionally order from a local retailer who also ships. No subscription, I like to try beers I don’t know and I always order my favorites. I have to say that I consume comparatively little alcohol, even if it doesn’t seem like it.
I like it, one of my favourites. I guess we look for different things.
The clue may be in the IPA tag? You can ‘hop’ an IPA as much as you like, but it won’t be truly tasty IMHO (and palate).
Don’t what it’s like in the Uk but here every micro brewery is trying to out IPA each other. The result is often a beer that tastes worse than a trip to the dentist.
“Grapefruit and mango”
Bleurgh
Most Aussie beers whether micro or main stream are mostly crap
It’s really disappointing- and frankly rather depressing when I see all those European beers here on this forum
The UK market has moved towards ‘golden beers’ and things like lighter-weight IPAs. Looking at some of the pub bar pictures above, you’ll often struggle to find ye olde ale/bitter and/or a porter beer.
The days when people were defined as either bitter or lager drinkers passed many years ago, as there are so many choices nowadays for something which, to my palate, is ‘in the middle ground’. Worse, we now have cold/chilled versions, which to me often taste of nothing other than cold!
There again, with so many pubs in the UK relying on food sales nowadays, it’s hardly surprising that the stronger tasting bitters have waned in popularity.
I wish they’d spend a bit of time making goldens and Pilsners down here. But it’s all IPAs or worse XIPAs, I mentioned it once at a little brewery and they told young folk won’t drink them.
Hopped beers, especially dry-hopped, deteriorate really quickly so need to be enjoyed fresh. It’s possible @Tony had an older bottle.
Have a bash at either, (or both) of these quality Yorkshire offerings.
Ilkley Pale … … … A full flavoured pale ale, which most certainly hits the spot.
Ilkley Blonde … … … A much lighter pale ale, yet still very tasty.
I buy these from my local Morrisons, who stock a wide range of proper Yorkshire beers, and they’re almost permanently on offer at 4 X 500ml bottles for seven squid, which is just
BBE 09/25. Maybe just not to my taste.
Thank you, Dave. I’ll check my local s/markets to see if they stock them.
A favourite tipple from a lovely part of the world. The Hockney exhibition is highly recommended.
A relative of mine lived in Plevna, a run down area of Leeds which eventually fell to slum clearance. I’m guessing there’s a link, not to the beer but to the Balkans?
Indeed, there is a link: the name Plevna (in this case in Tampere, Finland) comes from Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878). Finnish Guards’ Rifle Battalion fought in Plevna, Bulgaria (modern Pleven) and so several locations in Finland were named after that distant location.
Thank you
