Made into a very fine film directed by Elia Kazan. James Dean was the troubled lead.
Indeed. Netflix are currently making a TV series adapted by Zoe Kazan ( Elia’s granddaughter and Paul Dano’s partner). Don’t know much about it but it does have Florence Pugh in it, who I rate v highly
Just started this:
And reading this for light relief:
12th in the series. No surprises, formula as usual, but always inspires me to cook something French - pâté de campagne this weekend, I reckon.
Just finished the unabridged audiobook of Shirley Jackson’s
The Haunting of Hill House 1959. A psychological horror story set in a reputedly haunted house. I read the physical book about 5 years ago on holiday, but I’d forgotten some scenes.
Just bought it. There are three novellas in it , and each will be made into a series
I may keep the book for my holiday
The title is a bit misleading, but this guys story of how he built a replica Spitfire is a page turner. He also has chapters on the development of this iconic aeroplane.
Mostly read on a trip from Scotland to Bologna, by plane.
Just completed the following book……..
Which, following a search, I note was originally suggested to the forum by @JSchmidt here.
Has anybody else read this work? If so, what are your thoughts.
Ironic that the first blurb on the cover is from the Daily Mail, the voice of treachery in the 1930s, and right-wing hooey ever since.
After years of being a Dylan Carlson/Earth music fan, finally got around to reading one of his literary influences:
Cormac McCarthy
Blood Meridian
You can really feel how it underpins the music that Earth made in their later albums like Hex.
Utterly superb use of a language.
Yes, very different reads though. East of Eden is a bit of an epic.
Kraftwerk: Future Music from Germany
Uwe Schütte Penguin 2020. A readable and informed book on the band which is especially good on the German context, but the author knows Britain well having worked here for many years.
Titanium Noir by Nick Harkaway. I’ve just finished this book for my book group and it is absolutely brilliant. It’s a proper hard-boiled noir thriller complete with a private detective but it’s set in the near future. Nick Harkaway is John le Carre’s son and it is really well done - highly recommended
@Dynaudio1 Yes a great book, I’m half way through “Entitled” and the Mountbattens is next
Looking forward to the paperback version of “Entitled” with it’s updates.
Two young girls are murdered whilst preparing for a Halloween party and the police arrest and charge a suspect.
Kari Voss a behavioural psychologist attached to the police refuses to accept his guilt.
An interesting battle starts between the two parties. A novel approach to the crime story and most enjoyable.
Put on Kindle when it was a free download.
I get a daily email from ‘bookbub’ that gives recommendations of Kindle books greatly reduced to 99p, usually, or free.
Finished my re-read of “Tom Jones.” I enjoyed it as much in 2026 as I did in 1973.
ereaderIQ.co.uk is my usual guide. Very useful if you read series as eg number 8 of 13 books is often discounted.
