What courier do you trust for shipping HiFi?

I have currently a problem with 2 LS both damaged during transport. Anyone who had the same problem: did they inspect the damaged goods or do they just not pay attention to it, only trying to escape refunding until you manage to corner them?

Both my speakers were damaged and I made the claim. The courier dragged their feet and wanted to come and do multiple inspections and they refused to give a specific time so I had to take days off work. The insurance company were the same. They wanted document after document from each other. Then the insurer wanted documents from the dealer and PMC. Then they said theyā€™d only pay for the value of damaged MDF and veneers. Then I had to get PMC to state it was non repairable and a write off. Then the insurer insisted I get a quote from a furniture restorer. And months later I got a brand new pair of speakers from the insurer and a voucher for a free reshipment from UPS. Cost me a fortune in time off work. If I had worked the time I took off and just made no claim, threw the speakers away and bought another pair Iā€™d have come out ahead. Which is what they count on when you start the claim process hoping youā€™ll give up.

I havenā€™t had any damaged goods, only lost ones. I imagine they are pretty hard on all claims though.

When the Monitor Audio speakers I shipped vanished I went back to the drop-off point (Sainsburys) and the shop staff checked through their backroom but couldnā€™t find them. DPD couldnā€™t find them either. After a couple of calls/emails with DPD a few days later for them to confirm the consignment was lost I was able to claim the full value though I had already had to pay back the buyer at this point and been accused of dishonesty.

With Royal Mail I dropped off a Yamaha AVR for collection, paid for insurance. The Buyer then sent me photos showing the front damaged and bay door broken. I had photos of the box before I sent it, diligently covered in fragile tape and undamaged, the buyer took matching photos for me showing a front corner of the box caved in. I started a claim with Royal Mail and sent the photos but the claim was refused due to ā€˜lack of evidenceā€™ so I just had to refund the Buyer repair costs.

As you mention having to take time off work to wait for couriers that reminds me of a particularly annoying occasion where I did the same. I was waiting at home and had the DPD delivery tracker up on my phone; the tracker had a nice icon of the van superimposed over the map so I watched it cruising down the dual carriageway, missing the exit for my town, then carry on out of the area. Moments later I received a ā€œSorry you werenā€™t inā€ text messageā€¦

UPS. Especially since In have a personal account with them. Account pricing is excellent and their delivery times and handling seem very good.

I was advised some time ago never to put a ā€˜Fragileā€™ sticker on an item to be posted as the packers take great delight in throwing them around.

Iā€™ve had terrible luck with UPS. They damaged both my speakers and complicated the claim. And when I sent my 250 to the UK, they removed all copies of docs in the document pounch. Then lost them. Then customs charges me 800 pounds to release my 250 for shipment back to Naim because UPS lost the documents. Then UPS gave me a 400 pound credit rather than compensate for the customs charge. And when my 250 was sent back to me, the creadit had expired while it was being DRed.

I can probably think of similar events involving DHL and FedEx too.

I do prefer the quick delivery time of UPS, because in my head I think the quicker it gets there, the less time it is in their possession to get knocked. Taking lots of photos beforehand is always a good idea.

I had a problem with Evri/eBay once where they said the item was over 2meters. However it was a 1990ā€™s Arcam CD player, so couldnā€™t possibly be that big - the photos helped, and they stopped chasing me for money.

Then a couple of weeks ago, I sent off my XPS to Italy via eBay with a UPS charge of Ā£5.99 (from my house to eBay shipping location in the UK). After it left, I panicked and thought that was far too cheap for a very heavy box, and wondered if Iā€™d missed something. I contacted eBay, but they said no problem, no extra charge, and item was delivered.

I suppose it has to be said, that it all depends on people in the end, and how tight the timescales they are given to deliver, so itā€™s all a bit of a risk.

The buyer pays for the onward shipping cost from the UPS UK depot to final destination in Italy, which is not usually seen by the seller in the UK. This is the benefit of using the Global Shipping Program. Pleased to hear successful delivery made as Italy does not have a great post system.

I did triple box this one, so that may have helped

Iā€™m sorry to hear of your shipping woes. UPS has always been one of the better ones around here. Could be a localized or country specific thing, like operations managers and how they interact with their employees. They seem to run a tight ship in southern Ontario here and Iā€™ve shipped across Canada with them as well.
Teddy Pardo used DHL and the shipment arrived on time and undamaged, but it was just the one shipment.
Anyway, wishing you better luck with other shippers.
