What DVD, Blu-ray or streamed film have you just watched?

Yes Scarface is brilliant and the 4K blu ray is too.

The Straight Story.

One of our favourite Lynch films… based on a true story of Alvin Straight’s journey to see his estranged and ill brother travelling by lawn mower.

I watched the 1979 film “Murder by decree” on 4K Blu-Ray last night. The movie has a very talented cast. I am also a big fan of Sherlock Holmes stories.
Despite that, I was very underwhelmed by the movie. It is rather boring and not interesting. A great waste of a talented cast.

Can I recommend the far better ‘The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes’ withe the brilliant Robert Stephens. A much better film

On Prime.
The US is out to get the nasty guys.IA replicants that were unjustly blamed for destroying Los Angeles.

A lot is crammed into two hours but it has a reasonable story set against an invented landscape with an explosive sound track. (The REL sub has moved a couple of inches).

Good fun.

I thought ot was incredibly well made.

But tone deaf. I spent the whole movie rooting for them to wipe out the AI. Only to be let down. Felt like a propaganda flick for my enemy.

Saw yesterday evening this one with my better part. Difficult movie to digest…, it’s not a thriller, it’s not a pure erotic movie ……, but at the end it’s still an interesting watch…

I can’t forgive Alien 3 for killing off Newt and Hicks off camera, or at all.

Watched Romulus last night. I didn’t go and see it at the cinema, I couldn’t be bothered to watch people I couldn’t care about be butchered.

Actually, I was wrong. The initial world building was good, and I quickly empathised with the protagonist and her android; anticipating his journey.

It moved into farce later on, but I enjoyed it more than than Prometheus, or the last one.

Everyone says that. But even in the earliest treatments of the script, they were gone. The primary goal was to create an environment of despair easily as terrifying as the Alien. No redeeming characters; no ray of light; hope; or even a familiar cocky marine to cling to. Just people guilty of depraved crimes, and no way of defending themselves. It’s not something that could work with Hicks and a cute kid in tow. It had to be your worst nightmare even without an alien. And taking Hicks and Newt was also part of the universe taking everything from Riply before getting a run up to kick her when she’s down.

I think Alien3, especially the director’s cut is really something in a cinema system. Moreso than even the excellent Alien and Aliens.

If you’ve not seen it in a very long time, I think watching it with new eyes is worthwhile.

I do understand the narrative logic, I just don’t think it needed to be an Alien film.

Logic akin to: Kill it, burn it to the ground.

Expectations subverted.

I wish they had just stopped after Aliens.

There have been interesting ideas since, hampered by poor storytelling and characterisation.

In The Earth - Netflix

100% utter rubbish

Jude Law’s character is a hollowed out and injured FBI officer looking for some quiet time in rural Idaho. But he is so used to sniffing the air he detects a white supremacy cell with plans to take over the USA administration.
It’s a decent actioner with a strong cast and interesting soundtrack.

On Prime.

The Lord of The Rings - The War of the Rohirrim.

A Middle Earth story in manga style animation.

Thinking positively, no ladders were harmed in the making of the film and only a couple of hours wasted.

Are you going to share the title?

Beautiful, and disquieting of course. A story like this could do without blockbuster stars, but Jude Law is very good anyway.
