Hot Shots

A bit of silly nonsense with the kids.

Had some friends over for a film night on Saturday.

Started with ‘Ruthless People’. Bloody funny. Always good watching a film you like with people who haven’t see it before, and also find they enjoy it.

Followed it up with ‘Tropic Thunder’. One for the boys, both our ladies chose to retire!

Arsenic and Old Lace

Superb. Frank Capra directed.

An annual re-watch.

John Sturges’ famous 1960 Western isn’t a patch on its source material – Kurosawa’s incomparable Seven Samurai (1954) – but it’s held up pretty well, despite a few wooden performances and the oddly inert staging of some of the fight scenes. But there are plus points: some gorgeous widescreen cinematography; Elmer Bernstein’s super-rousing, Copland-influenced score; Robert Vaughn, James Coburn and Eli Wallach as the baddie are all excellent; and Sturges proves once again his adeptness at handling big ensemble casts (something he did again three years later with The Great Escape).

Despite this picture having its faults, the 2016 remake isn’t fit to lick its boots.

A mostly excellent film 7/10.

Watched Donnie Brasco last week. Brilliant film and Pacino at his usual best. Unlike that pretty dreadful Scent of a Woman cheese fest horror.

Must get a pair of Cazal 968.

2012 - Prime. End of the world as we know it. Ludicrous screenplay as earth undergoes tectonic bust-up. Rich & powerful attempt to screw the remaining 8 billion schmucks by escaping with Ark spaceships (Queen Liz 2 & corgis have brief cameo appearance).
Total nonsense yet 8/10. :grin::grinning:

Oops - they aren’t spaceships but giant Arks stuffed full of the Rich, flora & fauna and artworks (think Mona Lisa).

Daft but watchable :joy:

Iron Sky - Prime

Forget Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, this has the Nazis occupying the lunar landscape.
Not your typical war movie. :grimacing:

Is it fiction or is it a documentary?

The cartoon version is probably better since it made more money.

I picked up the DVD in HMV Canterbury (soon to be closing its doors then apparently reopening in another location but we’ve been there before).

This is so good just brilliant then as it goes on and we get to the end a major disappointment- I mean really couldn’t they come up with a better ending.
