A Simple Plan on Blu-ray Disc. Despite first appearing in 1998, this was my first time viewing this film - how did I miss it??. A very good film indeed with the late great Bill Paxton and a remarkable performance from Billy Bob Thornton.
Yes that’s a great film.
According to just watchthe only streaming platform is bbc I-player and that’s not for me.
Current bluray offerings quite expensive.
Pity… I enjoy most BBT performances.
I purchased the German issue blu-ray (titled Ein Einfacher Plan) which I found for about a fiver + £2 shipping online, so worth looking out that it. The PQ is excellent and it has an English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.
A frightening film. In a world that is breaking down, pollution has taken from humanity the ability to reproduce. We are childless. Until one pregnant girl becomes the focus for rival social factions.
Local part time resident( well he probably has more sunny property to see him and family through the winter) Clive Owen undertakes the task of seeing the pair to safety.
Michael Caine does his impression of John Lennon. You can’t hide Michael we know it’s you under the wig.
Alfredo Cuaron, his photographer and set designers do a masterful job of turning Bexhill on Sea into an internment camp and war zone.
A scary world that seems to come ever closer.
Prime.
Andy Warhol’s Blood for Dracula. 1974.
The late great Udu Kier is fabulous.
The main connection with Andy Warhol was with the inclusion of Joe Dallesandro and a few other Andy’s cronies.
Still shocking..
Blood Simple
My favourite Coen brothers film.
My DVD version was 4:3 with a poor picture and sound.
Just ripped the BluRay, much better.
Great tension which builds inexorably.
Full of the dark humour, the type that kept Hitchcock laughing whilst editing his films.
I love the soundtrack, with tones and simple progressions.
M
The brothers want a crime committed so go to the local law enforcement officer.
Mathew M makes a bargain.
Creepy,dirty,mucky.
Friedkin nearing his best.
Bluray for me but Prime/Apple for £3.49.
Ah but which version? The original or the director’s cut entitles “Blood Simple: The Thriller”
The original is more like a regular psycho horror flick, but the latter more fleshed out.
Standard version, wasn’t aware there was an extended one.
I am not sure an extended version would be an improvement. Which do you prefer?
I’m not aware of the director’s cut being any longer. If it is, it’s by seconds not minutes. It’s just edited differently to assemble the pieces to make a thriller rather than a horror.
When the brothers directed it, they were new and needed to find an audience hence to more slasher focused cinema release. But they were never horror directors, being masters of the thriller and the comedy.
Wrong Numbers (2024)
Brilliantly acted, particularly by Emily Hall and great script. Simple plot. Not sure it’s everyone’s cup of tea, but I found it interesting and real.
I won’t go hunting, although I would be interested if it falls in my way.
The characters in this film are incompetent, that is part of the humour.
The pacing is spot on, and the ending both fever pitched and darkly funny, “If I see him mam I’ll be sure to let him know’.
Looking at my old non director’s cut box and the director’s cut it actually seems that the director’s cut (96m) is 3 minutes shorter than the theatrical release (99m)
Last night I watched Sleepers on Blu-ray. Not seen this in many years and watching it last night was like watching the film anew. Still a very powerful and moving film.
Das Boot
Not a film I watch often, all too painful.
Great technical and narrative achievement.
Now doing a regular blokes warfilm night, this was the first choice.
Warfare next week.

I watched ‘Greyhound’ a few weeks ago.
Tom Hanks in his first command on an American destroyer helping escort a convoy to Liverpool. Taking on your Das Boot mates.
The action mostly happens on the bridge with a constant stream of full rudder, course 120 degrees ,hold her steady but it seemed to work. It is factual without glorification.
Uncle Bert was a merchant seaman for White Star and did his share. It must have been a frightening experience.
Don’t forget Jack Hawkins and the Cruel Sea.
I watched it on Apple. Dialogue sound lacking.
,
Well that was quite good, especially so as, all those years ago, 28 weeks later was pretty much the same movie as 28 days later, whereas this is its own tale. Will watch Boneyard soonish…
Ordered.
