Yes, nuance and detail are hard to convey in a large scale film.
I too have a fondness for Lynch’s attempt, and have a couple of longer edit film edits. He made more effort to convey the philosophical landscape. But, with many missteps.
As with Jackson’s LOTR, I feel Villeneave has probably given us the best we are likely to get.
The prequels were, for me, ordinary. There was none of the intelligence and human insight that populates the main saga. I kept reading, but with little enjoyment.
The best science fiction I have read more recently has been The Expanse series, which has been well adapted for TV. Same genre, very different approaches.
My wife also complains if I suggest putting on any of the Dune films, unless they are requested by friends!
I reported that I had visited the cinema with my cushion (Not a lot of padding left in seats or my backside) to see Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague. I remembered that he had made a Chet Baker drug related romance thingy with Ethan Hawke.
Amazon Prime Video were flogging the pairs ‘Blue Moon’ a story of song writer Lorenz Harts’ life for £1.99.
It is a theatre piece all about the delightfully verbose script and Hawke’s delivery. Loosing his well being though alcoholic unreliability he ingratiates himself with any listener. Willing or unwilling.
This film is more concentrated on the kinetic; and as such it succeeds. Where it somewhat fails is in generating the feel of time passing, and the bone grinding weariness.
We don’t really get to know the crew, beyond Hank’s steward, and so the tension is lessened.
As such, the highs and lows are a bit less noticeable.
A very modern film in its telling. I think they are very successful in showing the size of the convoy, and the tactics used to protect it. I don’t think this could be as well achieved in an earlier cinematic era.
The story about the Maestro of a Berlin Orchestra.
She is confident, pugnacious and demanding in her work and relationships but her life hides secrets.
A mesmerising performance from Kate Blanchett
Any classical music devotes,if they haven’t seen it, I am sure would find it interesting.
Thanks for this recommendation, a very enjoyable and thought provoking in its own way. The pitch to make this film would certainly have been interesting to hear.
This is a wonderful story if you have half an interest in cinema.
Spielberg’s life as a film director from the age of five but turned into a family drama.
His artistic mother, driven father, growing skill and extended Jewish family are all warmly featured.
Easily streamed but the Bluray has an extra collection of interesting features.
Cosy.
Yes, really enjoyable and very different from so many new offerings nowadays. Excellent performances from all three lead characters. Highly recommended.
Could you call this heartwarming science fiction? Perhaps.
Jim Carey meets Clementine, Kate Winslet ,and slowly he grows to love the more extravagantly mannered woman.
She becomes bored with him and visits a memory erasure clinic.
He is upset and visits the same clinic.
The story is their journey back to each other. The moral? Try harder with what you’ve got.
I streamed on Amazon Prime. Not the best of prints.
A wonderful wacky romance between a would be suicide and pantomime monkey.
I know but do I ever lead you astray with modern cinema recommendations.
It is a bit sweary and unusual frottage was mentioned in one review.
Prime FOC.
Best film of the week.
