Oh trouble becomes you it cuts you down to my size.
And you never were less than perfect in my eyes.

a brilliant piece of history, lyrics and music. Yay Gordon Lightfoot!
Ditto your comments for another GL song…
There was time in this fair land when the railroad did not run…
I’m not Canadian…but if I was…I’d lobby to make “The Canadian Railroad Trilogy” the national Anthem. It is a powerful, moving, poetic piece of music…GL deserves far more recognition.
I agree. His music has been with me all my life it seems. Inspired me to visit Canada and see the “wild majestic mountains”. Saw GL a couple of times at the Massey Hall in Toronto. His voice is pretty much shot now but he is in his 80’s!
Nice to hear from a fellow Lightfoot fan - doesn’t get much of a mention on here but Bob Dylan once said he wished he could write songs like GL. Coming from him that’s enough of an endorsement anyone could wish for.
Well I am Canadian, and this one is a classic…Powderfinger.
Look out, mama, there’s a white boat coming up the river.
Deep within my heart lies a melody, the song of old San Antone
I discovered this music in college and bought the LP when it was released. I have this on vinyl and Bob Wills was one of my Dad’s heroes. Merle Haggard made this LP happen. He is one of mine. I have been through Oklahoma and Bakersfield. The American West begins in Arkansas. Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys were the soundtrack, at least in his day.
When we get back to normal, you should plan to visit the USA.
So, here I am once more…
Play me Old King Cole
That I may join with you
"He came dancing across the water”…another brilliant opening line and tune from Neil
Your face when sleeping is sublime
And then you open up your eyes
We who have so much to you who have so little
To you who don’t have anything at all
We who have so much more than any one man does need
And you who don’t have anything at all, ah
I see a dark sail on the horizon
It’s just gone noon, half past monsoon on the banks of the River Nile.
I don’t believe we’ve had this Joe Jackson masterpiece.
‘Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street’
or the equally brilliant Tom Robinson
’ Only the very young and the very beautiful can be so aloof’
Yay…another Ian Anderson fan!
One of the greatest lyricists ever?
No ? in my mind, a brilliant lyricist. A huge body of work full of allegories, social commentary, witty humor…
I absolutely agree… His lyrics are amazing.
