Wondering if someone could advise me, I have a Naim system but with a Linn Klimax DS streamer. I stream from a Naim Core however I like to select my music via artists and unlike my Naim Atom there is no artwork just letters.
I used to use twonky media via a WD nas and are now thinking to go back and just use the core to rip the music. So my question is what NAS and what software should I use for Linn?. I don’t want to spend to much and have lots of spare drives so an empty Nas would be fine.
Just a note it really needs to be simple as I’m a little out of practice with such things.
Thanks in advance
Forum favourites are Synology or QNAP.
To keep it simple, both have 1-bay models, but that makes a separate backup devise vital.
Both have basic pre-installed UPnP packages, but again forum favourites to get a marked improvement with user selection interface are Asset UPnP or Minimserver
Have you done a search for existing threads on buying a NAS and suitable ripping/upnp software?
Loads of advice and opinions there.
I have taken a look but some of the posts are going back a bit and wondered about current models.
I went around this 6 plus years ago.
You need decent ripping software, and that is easy with dbpoweramp.
Then a NAS that supports a music server. My choice was Asset. You quickly get to Qnap or Synology as the main two nas that are supported by Asset.
I’m drawn to the Qnap TS-233 as I should be able to use the core to rip to it then use Linn Zazoo if that’s no good I have the option or minim or plex.
I’d suggest QNAP or Synology, justifiably forum favourites, and then installing Asset UPnP or, if you’ve a lot of classical, MinimServer. Then I’d use the Linn app, which I find a lot more user friendly than Kazoo. (I think Kazoo may be at or near end of support.)

For what it worth, I have been using Synology for a good while with Asset and Minimserv. I admit it was a robust setup but too much settlings and maintenance for me and my knowledge.
Now the nas is down replaced by Rasberry Pi 4 with the same softwares (+ bubble UPnP) and my life (music) is much more easyer that way.
I’m very happy with Asset for my .flac + hi res. I keep the free minimserve for my very old mp3 with underground music from the 90’s just for fun and nostalgic moments. ;-). I found it easier to have both well separated on different servers.
I’ve had my Qnap for 8 years and it has been solid. I download from Bandcamp these days but I have also used EAC to rip CDs. Regardless of number of drives, you WILL need a backup strategy such as cloud or usb drive.
You may care to take a look at this thread, with some useful comments including by a couple of peps posting here.
So far I haven’t replaced the current QNAP unit, but I have changed another drive.
With no case for requiring a change, will likely stick with QNAP to save grappling with a new interface.
For future rips you are better to use dBpoweramp for the improved metadata.
I use dBpoweramp (for ripping), AssetUPnP on a 24/7 PC and stream to a Linn streamer using Linn Kazoo or now the latest Linn App.
Perfect.
If you go down the Synology or QNAP route it is worth spending a bit more and getting one of the higher spec models. I had a cheap one originally and found it made a LOT of noise. I eventually upgraded to a better model and put SSDs in it and the noise went right down
I found that the noise in mine was from the cooling fan, not the disks. They are turned up to max by default, and turning it to the minimum setting meant that it is nearly always off.
For a music only NAS the workload is very low, so the entry level Synology models are more than enough.
Hi Chris, I found my HDDs made a horrible mechanical noise whatever setting I used and even on the low/quiet fan setting it was still a perceptible and irritating noise. You can obviously put them in a different room to your lounge but my wife’s hearing is so sharp she complained wherever it went!!
ps. I also purchased pro level HDDs which had a 7200 rpm. That would also have contributed to the noise. My experience would be to go a lot lower in the 5400 range.
Synology . Two Bay, set up as raid 1…
I took the plunge and went for the QNAP and it arrived today nice and early.
It’s far from easy to set up ! But My PC can see it , my laptop can see it and my Atom and DS can see it but my Core can’t. I have tried for hours looking on you tube reading up on setting but I give up. I think it’s time to go back to CDs and just use the streamer for tidel.
I have dragged music onto it and it’s been playing fine but the core does not see it as a store.
I give up
Unless I’m missing something, why aren’t you just streaming direct from the NAS? Your streamer can see the NAS so you just need some good upnp software like Asset on it
I was but when searching via artist there’s no artwork so it looks very basic. Plus I wanted to back up the hard drive to another hard drive. So I was hoping to killed two birds and all that.
What upnp software are you using on the NAS? Use something like Asset and you’ll get the artwork when browsing by artist
The WD Red drive in my Synology is barely audible, and sits in a cupboard in the kitchen. I would certainly get some grief from my wife if she could hear it.
Multiple drives obviously won’t help noise levels either. More spinning disc noise, and more heat to trigger the fan. I can see no reason to run more than one drive on a music only NAS unless you can’t find one with enough capacity to hold your library.
