To my knowledge the first recording of the complete Sibelius symphonies from a French orchestra. Should be interesting! Out now for download

End of Feb…

An extract from the third symphony sounded wonderful on BBC Radio 3 on Saturday, and the reviewer’s response was positive. Introductory offers on the set are good …

re the Sibelius Symphonies, Paavo Jarvi: Thanks Bertbird, I’ve just seen a review in the Guardian online, which isn’t especially complimentary, however that same reviewer doesn’t like the Vanska Minnesota remakes compared with his first set in Lahti - an opinion I disagree with! I’ve gone for the new Paavo Jarvi and have to say the recorded sound is superb, I don’t think I’ve ever heard the timpani so clearly in many of the symphonies.

Blackdogbarking, the 3rd symphony is especially fine. I also endorse no.2: urgent tempi at times, but with the customary slowing down for the closing pages of the final movement. No.6 also sounds good, but yet to listen to the rest.

So in between the lines - do I hear you suggesting to buy ?

Hi BertBird, it’s always down to personal preference whether a set is worth buying. I’ve not heard all the symphonies yet, but I like nos 2, 3, and 6. The recordings are very good and a lot of detail comes through. Perhaps they don’t have the icy-ness of some others though. Why not sample, perhaps on Qobuz or Spotify? Let me know how you get on.

Personally, I always have room for more interpretations of the Sibelius symphonies!

Out next month (8th Feb) on vinyl, CD and other formats, Mercury Rev revisit Bobbie Gentry’s monumental 1968 album The Delta Sweete with a host of guest vocalists, including Hope Sandoval, Beth Orton, Laetitia Sadier, Vashti Bunyan, Margo Price, Norah Jones, etc.

This video of Margo Price doing “Sermon”…

…and Norah Jones tackling “Okalona River Bottom Band”

give a flavour of just how good this album’s gonna be…
