What to use to clean lint and dust off an LP before playing it?

Hello Dear Forum Friends,

I have read the other previously posted topics on this subject and was after a simple answer, please.

I believe I have read somewhere on this forum to use a microfibre cloth instead of a carbon fiber antistatic brush.

Is the microfiber cloth your preferred method before playing an LP?

Warm regards,

Mitch In Oz.

I’ve always used the brush and never felt any urge to change. I feel the brush gets into the groove better than a cloth but that might just be me.

This needs a poll!

I have been using a carbon fibre brush since the 70s.

@Gigantor - I thought I would actually add a poll. Fairly close to the top of the thread. Hope it might be of use, I can delete it if you’d rather I did. No worries either way  :peace_symbol:

@gthack, A Poll sounds like a good idea. Go for it.

Warm regards,

Mitch.

I’ve used these dry for over 40 years.
It’s not a brush or a cloth it has fibres and lifts the dust line with a tilt of the wrist.
Never use it wet though. :+1:t2:

Most of the time, the stylus works fine. Occasionally, the record cleaning machine is needed.

Otherwise, this does the job.

I think DECCA won some award for developing a micro carbon fiber brush.

I have an Ortofon Red brush on one turntable and a velvet brush on another. I’ve seen articles from reputable places claiming carbon fibre damages vinyl - hasn’t stopped me using it though.

I have an original Decca Brush, from the 70’s - but I rarely use it, TBH…

I use both, but have to say when I first had TT I just used the brush; now, 30 years I rather like the way the microfibre cloth removes fingerprints.

I have that same brush, except mine has German branding, so is labelled “Teldec”. I use it for the record, and Stylast cleaning fluid for the stylus, before every LP side that I play.

Milty Super Exstatic Carbon Brush - It works and at a very reasonable price.

I have used the AT ‘Sonic Broom’ (lol) wet…good for removing or lessening crap on pre-owned records, and some new ones, on initial play.

Usually it’s dry though. Much prefer it to my old carbon brushes, incl the AT carbon.

Hi
I’ve been using them for over forty years as I said and have one new spare in the drawer to see me out. :scream: :face_with_hand_over_mouth: :+1:t2:

I remember the early carbon fiber brushes used to “shed”. Do they still do this?

I have two Watts Parastatic brushes that have seen better times (no liquid used in those, either).

Bought this in 1976, use it every time, never used anything else. You can tell it’s age from the ‘patina’ …or maybe its just grubby! Never attempted to clean it.
