What to use with a NAC 72

Hello. I have a NAC72 and a NAPv175 I will use for now as a 2 channel until I find a proper olive amp. My ultimate plan is to use the 72 for…

CD player (preferably Naim)
DVD/sacd player
Tuner (Naim)
Phono
Reel to Reel ( a pipe dream, perhaps)

Should I get a Hicap? A supercap? What cables will I need specifically? I have two interconnects for the amplifier channels so far.

I will purchase some Naim brand (heh heh) speaker cable and interconnects, but the nails, I mean names (duh) are confusing right now.

I am worried about running out of inputs to be quite honest. I guess I could share digital sources.

If you are tired of reading replies like this feel free to delete. I imagine you see these kinds of posts a lot. Thank you, nonetheless for your help and patience.

Tim - on the amp side, an Olive Hicap will match nicely with the 72. You’ll need a SNAIC5 to connect the Hicap to the 72, and a SNAIC4 to connect the Hicap to the 175 (the farthest right input on the 175 when looking from the rear).

When funds allow, an Olive 250 would be the obvious choice to replace the 175. What speakers do you intend using ?

Isn’t it beautiful?

Remember that Naim provide all the cables you need (except for speaker cables) in the relevant box so you shouldn’t really have to buy any. Second hand sellers often forget this, of course, but you should always ask them if they are included. If not, haggle! Otherwise you may need to spend a few hundred extra to get a system that actually works.

It certainly is, especially if it was supported.

I have zero knowledge to a NapV175 but,
Would they work together without a PSU for the preamp ?

No they wouldn’t. There’s no pre-amp PS inside the NAPV175.

Well it’s 30 yrs old so it’s expected not to be supported anymore. Sufficient repair solutions on the non-Naim supported market if one has a donor cd player.

Isn’t it beautiful?

Yes. Yes it is.

Excellent. Thank you.

Don’t laugh… I’ve had KEF c55s for almost 30 years. My first and so far only true hi-fi speakers other than NHT super Zeros I used for my computer. I just added ferrofluid to the drivers, slightly improved the cabinet, and recapped the crossovers.

I use a REL H/T1205 subwoofer, and I am quite happy. After I get the components done, I will consider getting some true full range-rs for my currently limited space. Is hooking the subwoofer up to the 72 going to be a problem? I NEED as close to 20-20K response as possible.

And I would need another SNAIC5 to connect to the CD player, correct? Or in my case, A SNAIC to RCA in the meantime.

You’ll need an interconnect cable here rather than a SNAIC, in either DIN5 to DIN5 or 2x RCA to DIN5 configuration, depending on the source. For a Naim source, DIN5 at both ends is preferred.

Have a look at the FAQ which explains the different cable types -

I’m very well aware of age, not my point really.

This is great. Thank you.

There are only 4 inputs on the 72 so bear that in mind if you want to utilise all of the list in the opening post.

Nothing to laugh at buddy. I still use a set of B & W DM110 that I have had from new. Had them looked at by an engineer 5 years ago and still going strong. I would love a new set to go with my set up, but really don’t know what to get. Had a demo last year of the Wharfedale Linton and a set of Harbeth monitor 40 (if I remember right). Speakers are a very personal thing to get right. The Harbeth sounded lovely, but I preferred the punch of the Linton. But I know I will not change from the 72/Hicap/180. Does everything I need and sounds beautiful.
