In May last year @ratrat wrote a fascinating account of comparing an XPS-DR and a 555PS-DR powering a nDac (see XPS-DR v 555PS DR: The Best Things, Pt III). I replied then that I couldn’t understand why the larger power supply should sound better since the nDac’s power demands must be easily within the capabilities of the XPS.
Notwithstanding that, I’ve just bought a used (2020) 555PS-DR to replace the XPS-DR on my nDac. I’ve been listening for about 3 hours and… I’m convinced. The difference is, frankly, astonishing. For example, on Del Amitri’s Change Everything (a CD I’ve listened to approximately 1 million times) I “heard” the snare drum for the first time. Of course, it’s always been there but not with such a noticeable attack and a clear frequency of its own. And on Lily Allen’s West End Girl (don’t laugh - I love it) the bass is so deep yet so clear and vocals which previously were sometimes buried in the mix and indistinct are now clear.
Finally, the unit was supplied with a standard power lead. So currently I have it on a Powerline Lite. I’ve ordered a full Powerline. It will be interesting to see if that improves it further.
I’ve purchased an ndac and an nd5xs2 to replace my nds. The darker presentation and more bass is welcome in my room with my Harbeth speakers. Powering the nDac with a 555ps DR that was serviced last summer. The synergy is back! I also bought a naim r-com remote control as a new year treat but whilst it’s impressive, I find it a bit too heavy, cold to the touch and I’m scared to drop it in case it continues through my wood floor to the centre of the earth. I think naim has carved it from plutonium or something of similar mass.
I am quite certain the cable needs a bit of running in
So much of my system is new and probably only the XS3 is properly run in so there’s a way to go yet but fortunately it’s sounding great already
I was pretty sure I picked the right bits & pieces but when it all comes together as well as it has it’s so rewarding…. I’ve been putting together some lovely setups over 35+ years and it’s nice to know that I still have the knack somehow of putting together a system that sounds great and our music sounds awesome
Pretty sure nobody else would have picked my pieces of kit and that’s fine…luckily nobody is sitting next to myself and my partner hearing what we are… it’s absolutely magical
Love Moorcroft, although it appears to be “out of fashion” at present, we put two lamps with a local auction house recently absolutely no interest. To add insult to injury they cut off one of the power leads as it failed their pac test!
Normally there isn’t Mike but the honourable Harry had already increased it a number of years ago with couple of inserts , I guess in anticipation this might happen ha
Long time since I posted anything on this thread…I’m still in hibernation mode with my Rega P1+ and KEF LSX II and I’m enjoying it very much. So much so, I picked up these stands second hand for a great price.
