double post
Yesterday afternoon. Symphony Hall. CBSO conducted by Kazuki Yamada. Milos Karadaglic on Guitar. ( seen him a few times.) Programme of Spanish or Spanish themed music. The well known Rodrigo was just lovely. Ravel’s Bolero is not a piece of music I particularly like, but hearing it played by a big Orchestra building from nothing to an almighty climax is truly spectacular. We have seen Kazuki a few times and is brilliant, you can see the orchestra is enjoying it, he enjoys it and he involves the audience and chats to them. The CBSO is excellent under him. Also a Q&A with Milos.
- Chabrier, España (6mins)
- Rodrigo, Concierto de Aranjuez (21mins)
- Rimsky-Korsakov, Capriccio Espagnol (15mins)
- Falla, The Three-Cornered Hat: Suite No.1 (10mins)
- Falla, The Three-Cornered Hat: Suite No.2 (12mins)
- Ravel, Boléro (15mins
Oh, and probably the best room treatment there is. Soft fabric wall panels and adjustable sound doors to tune the building.
What a beautiful hall! I love the warm colour scheme, too. How is that Japanese conductor?
Any good? Better than Nelsons?
Nice easy listening programming. Muti is also conducting Espana and Three Cornered Hat next week with the CSO.
Yamada is excellent, a breath of fresh air to be honest. I hope the CBSO can hold on to him. He conducts in a lot of places and lives in Berlin. You can see the orchestra love him and so does the audience.
Arooj Aftab at the Bristol Beacon last night. Wonderful, exquisite and magical. With an intense and slightly bonkers support too whose name I cant remember.
The Pretenders Chrissie Hynde (vocals & guitar) James Welbourne (guitar) Martin Chamber (drums) Nick Wilkinson (bass) at Sheffield City Hall last night.
This was the last gig of the UK tour Chrissie & the band were on fire ![]()
That doesn’t look like Martin Chambers on drums, was he ill?
Not mentioned or might have missed any announcement.

Saw, Pat Metheny on his solo MoonDail tour in Bologna yesterday evening.
Two hours of just him and his guitars, except for the Orchestration contraption he activated at the end. I have seen him play several times, and he is always different.
Always worth catching.
I love the fact that Frank was in the same class at school as Prince William.
I don’t think Martin Chambers has been in the band for a while now. He didn’t play on the last album in 2023.
Thought I wouldn’t like this concert because of the recorder involvement and I am not so much of a Telemann person.
But skipping the Telemann/recorder part this was actually a nice concert. And the tone of Nils is delightful.
In all the official bumph he is still listed as being a present member. But a Kris Sonne is named as playing on the last album, maybe it’s him? It’s just Chrissie Hynde now anyway isn’t it?
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Glasgow Hydro 3rd Nov 2024
I live in Kent but originally from Glasgow and I’m on one of my infrequent visits up the road to visit my father. As Nick Cave was also in town it seemed rude not to get a ticket for his show.
This was my first visit to the Hydro and honestly I wasn’t impressed. For those of you who don’t know it, it is a circular building so the seats are arranged in a semi circle from the edges of the stage around a huge floor area. Also, there are no seats at anything like floor level, they are all raised by a fair few feet from the floor on three levels. That means that none of the seats are close to the stage so unless you’re in the standing area on the floor you’re a long way from the action. When I booked my ticket, the seat plan gave the impression that it wasn’t too far from the stage but boy was I wrong! With such a huge space to fill I really didn’t think much of the sound system, it was nowhere near as good as at the O2 in London which is an even bigger venue but with a much better layout.
Anyway, enough about the venue, I was there to see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and they were absolutely superb. A real pleasure to see Colin Greenwood from Radiohead on bass and the mini gospel choir backing singers gave a sense of joy to the whole thing. Jubilee Street, Tupelo and The Mercy Seat were particular highlights for me but the whole set was fantastic with a selection from quite a few of the albums in his back catalogue. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds just keep on getting better and better.
Looking forward to seeing him on Friday at the O2 ( with a better sound system!)

Bryan Adams Nov 4 Munich. A highly enjoyable evening over about two and a half hours. Quite a few songs were just him singing solo with his guitar. What a great entertainer.
November 1, Mingus Dynasty concert. Buffalo, NY, USA
