We booked it over a year ago. I was amazed at how many people were affected by the Soul Mining songs from all those years ago, every one was singing along. I even had a sore throat the next day. Like you said it was just brilliant.
Myles Kennedy at Nottingham Rock City
Lead singer with Alter Bridge (and Slash’s band) out on a solo tour. His first love is guitar playing and fronting his own band gave plenty of opportunity to show off his talent. He is also known for having a great ‘rock’ voice but the sound engineer had it too low in the mix for much of the show. Worth seeing.
The show finished at 10 pm - unheard of. On the way out I realised it was because of the three club nights the venue were running. Whoever heard of rock and roll having to finish early to accomodate clubbers!!!
Devin Townsend was very entertaining as support.
Unusual mix of a great voice, acoustic guitar and lots of funny chat. Quite different.
is that in the uk?

29 November very nice performance of Haevn.
Location The Netherlands, Nijmegen.
“De vereniging”
The start was with Lily Meola. Very nice voice.
After that Haevn;
They played songs of there beautifull new album Wide awak. F.e. till the morning. Also with Lily Meola. Lots of the lyrics are very good. I recognize things from the past and the present.
Special request from the band was to try to be real present during the concert, meaning not looking through your mobile camera.
That went very well…and for those who are looking close on this picture they will see lots of mobile phones. That was because they were playing the song Bright lights.
Robert Plant’s Saving Grace at Woking New Vic Theatre, excellent gig, he does save his voice a bit until the latter part of the show relying on Suzi Dian to hit most of the high notes. Terrific musicians, the sound was amazing. I’ve only been to a couple of gigs here but both had superb sound, the other being Richard Thompson’s electric band.
del Amitri at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Absolutely packed. This is as close as we could get - behind the bar area at the back of the hall. 2000 people doing karaoke. Loved it.
John Etheridge & Pete Oxley, at The Spin jazz club in Oxford. The Spin is a multi venue club, last night’s gig was in the Summertown Wine Bar. John & Pete were in fine form, covering a wide spectrum of jazz styles, and finishing with a couple of very bluesy numbers. Pete’s a great guitarist (among many other projects he plays with Hejira) but John is a true virtuoso, a pleasure to watch/listen to, and always ready with a joke or anecdote. Great night
Yup. Brilliant guitar player. Nice guy too.
Joanne Shaw Taylor - British Blues Guitar Virtuoso
Ventured into the wind and rain on Friday to hear a programme of Sibelius and Elgar, the latter with Christian Tetzlaff as soloist:
It was December 6 so the concert started, appropriately, with a Finnish conductor (John Storgård) conducting the BBC Philharmonic in Finlandia on Finnish Independence Day! Then Elgar’s Violin Concerto. I still have Vilde Frang’s wonderful performance running in my head, so it took some time to come round to Tetzlaff’s reading but I did enjoy it (always do), particularly the final movement.
The last piece was Sibelius Symphony No 5 and the old warhorse received a magnificent performance, well worth braving the storm for.

The Undertones, Olympia Theatre, Dublin, saturday evening.
Opening shot to the Dublin audience - “We are from Derry, we mean you no harm”!!
Support act, the absolutely wonderful Dublin band Something Happens.
Brilliant set from both bands.
Unfortunately I was sick and couldn’t attend the concert with Herbert Blomstedt, at his age you always think it could have been the last opportunity.
That’s wonderful. We are going to see him play Sibelius VC next month! He comes around to Chicago often ( usually with Lars Vogt ) always enjoyable.
Program:
Grieg
Suite No. 1 from Peer Gynt
Lutosławski
Cello Concerto
Rachmaninov
Symphony No. 1
Performers:
Conductor: Dima SlobodenioukCello: Johannes Moser
Both the conductor and the soloist was totally unknown to me.
Familir Peer Gynt was pleasant enough.
I expected that Lutoslawski’s Cello Concert would be a difficult piece to sit through but it was worse.
Rachmaninoff’s Symphony 1 was rather an interesting piece. He composed when he was mere 22! Its premier was a huge disaster which put Rachmaninoff into a deep depression for a few years. I can hear many of his signature riffs but not as lush and romantic as his later pieces. But remarkably well put together.
Sorry to hear that Bert.
It is amasing that Blomstedt is still very active touring all over the globe. Maybe you can catch him in Berlin or Leipzig?
Get well soon!
Years ago (1980s probably) I saw that played by Rostropovich under the composer’s baton. It was part of a study day where the London Sinfonietta discussed his music and then played the pieces. It was a masterful performance and since then I’ve found it a work of great beauty.
