What was the last concert / gig you attended?

Was from last Wednesday. A fine concert - Mahler Lieder, Bruckner 4th symphony… Konstantin Krimmel was taking the voice parts in the lieder…

Saw Kenny Garrett at Ronnie Scott’s in London tonight. I hadn’t been to RS in more than 25 years.

We had a great time. RS delivers Jazz on a relaxed and sophisticated level. They’re cramming in 2 sets on the weekend, God knows how.

Kenny and the band had groove and force. But it was power with control. There were also beautifully quiet, almost intimate moments.

I waited for the right moment and shook his hand at the end. I thanked him and he just said “You’re very welcome, see you later.” :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Heey, @BertBird we heard the same program at the Concertgewouw last night.
I adore Hrusa as I have seen him in Chicago many times and always impressed with his decisive handling of the band. But last night, he was with his band Bamberger Symphony. Sure he did not disappoint. It was well balanced and tight very cohesive. A bit brighter tonally than Chicago which I did not mind. Tenor, completely unknown to me, was nice, too. I love Mahler’s songs.

Musicians

Bamberger Symphoniker

Jakub Hrůša - conductor

Konstantin Krimmel - baritone

Programme

Mahler - Blumine

Mahler - Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen

Bruckner - Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major ‘Romantic’

Yeah then we saw exactly the same artists and programs. I am happy that Hrusa is the conductor of my “house” orchestra. Konstantin was also good - while I am not totally into lieder (besides Goerne).

Yes lucky you! I was hoping he will get the Chicago MD spot! This was the first time I have heard him conduct other than the CSO. He is one of the better current young talent.
I also prefer Goerne over Konstantin in the tone but I appreciated his expressive phrasing given the contents of the lyrics.

Hania Rani Ensemble at the Barbican Saturday night. I thought very original, atmospheric and mesmerising. Apologies for poor blurred picture quickly taken on encore break so as not to distract, but possibly it captures the ghosts and spirits themes of the album played

The 21 year old South Korean wunderkind, Yunchan Lim, at the Wigmore hall this evening. He played Bach’s Goldberg Variations. I don’t really have the superlatives or musical language to describe this evening. I’m lost in awe and admiration that a single human being could write this extraordinary piece of music and then another human being could bring it to life in such a magical way. It’s very easy to focus on those people who are stupid, thoughtless or just plain evil (you can pick your own examples) and forget these brilliant creatives who bring such pleasure.
Interestingly, I’m back at Wigmore Hall on Sunday to hear Vikingur Olafsson play …the Goldberg Variations. It will be fascinating to see how he approaches this compared to Yunchan Lim

Let us know. I am debating for Olafsson’s recital in June. Tho he will be playing Beethoven and Schubert programs.

We were supposed to be having the same programme but it got changed to the Goldbergs at the last moment!

Yeah I read about that. Curious to see if he also switches to the Goldberg. The one I am thinking attending is in June so he would have plenty of time to practice.

I can only assume programme has changed as hasn’t had time to rehearse properly . However, I’m very intrigued to hear 2 different interpretations of the Goldbergs in one week.
However, I can absolutely recommend Yunchan Lim without any hesitation - absolutely astonishing

Mick Box, one of the classic rock guitar gurus. If the mighty Heep get back to NZ on their final tour, I’ll be there.

Excellent program! :+1:

Noted. :+1:

It was superb…for a local orchestra with a mix of amateur and semi professional musicians they are wonderful. The conductor told the audience the Dukas was written especially as a challenge to student musicians at the Paris conservatory. The Bridgnorth soloist was first class.

…And extra nice is that those programs are not your usual pieces for each composer. Finding new work is half of the fun!

We had a fantastic night out at Bexhill on Sea. I know both Bernie & Mick personally through my father, so it was amazing to have a quick catch up with them (as VIP guests) before the gig. What a band the mighty Heep still are. Absolutely brilliant!:metal:
