Bon Jovi, Edinburgh Murrayfield Stadium, 28 August. Two and a half hours of excellence. Dublin and Wembley are in for a treat.

Last Wednesday at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg: ‘Il Giardino Armonico’, led by Giovanni Antonini with Julia Lezhneva, performing oeuvres from Antonio Vivaldi and Joseph Haydn. A memorable evening in one of the most beautiful concert halls of Europe.

Morgan Noise, acoustic set, at Rough Trade West, Portobello. Probably the smallest gig I’ve ever been to - just six of us. Very nice though.

Rewind festival the other weekend. Good smattering of 80s bands for a bit of fun. Soul 2 soul, Roland gift, Trevor Horne band and Kim Wilde were good value, but The Human League were superb headliners. Later found out that Phil Oakey grew up on the same street as our daughter lives.

A couple of nights ago I went to see Jacqui McShee’s Pentangle. Jacqui is the only surviving member of the original band, the lineup is now drums, (electric) bass, sax and keyboards. Their more recent material is jazzy and good/well played, for me the gig was at its best when they played the original Pentangle stuff. She still has a fantastic voice and interpreted the songs beautifully. A really good gig. The audience was much younger than I expected. I really enjoyed Sam Grassie, the first support act. Junior Brother, the second act were pretty good, I found the lead singer a bit “shouty”, others in the audience enjoyed them a lot.

Bedouine last night at Milton Hall in the city of London showcasing her recent new album. The evening never really took off as the songs are pretty introspective and single paced. Picked up a bit in the middle with some Latin influenced numbers, and some of the older songs at the end I enjoyed.
Still, a good night out eating al fresco in some warm weather beforehand. Notable also for her spoken introduction to one of the songs when she explained it was all about a freshly slaughtered lamb at a wedding she attended when she was a child. Strange where inspiration can come from, but not an event most would choose to sing about.

I saw her a couple of years ago at the Ramsgate Music Hall (well more like a kiosk). Had a chat with her after the show - lovely lady and a great gig.

The Necks (pianist Chris Abrahams, bassist Lloyd Swanton, and drummer Tony Buck) at Peggy’s Skylight - Nottingham.
A full house and mostly all standing. Two improvised sets as usual with an interval. An enthralling and intense experience.

This was my second Necks gig, they have a particular pulse when playing live. I’d compare the crescendo of the final set in Nottingham to the industrial noise of Einstürzende Neubauten. Cathartic.

Last nights sets were very different to when I saw them last in Manchester.
Never the same twice, which makes them well worth seeing when they visit.
Both pieces were well over an hour, hence my having to catch the last train home!

@wardy Yes, it is remarkable how they improvise and their live sets are different again to their studio recordings which are overdubbed. I’ll certainly see them live again. I travelled to Nottingham, stayed the night - was woken by the fire alarm at 00.43 and revived by an excellent cup of expresso.

I was disappointed to miss this as I am away this week. Glad that you enjoyed it. I am interested in your comment on standing as whenever I have been to Peggy’s Skylight it has always been all seated very similar to Ronnie Scott’s.
