I bought John Mayer’s Sob Rock, which I also have on CD. I don’t own a turntable but had ambitions - until SHMBO went nuts at the idea of more clutter.
?
All of those are great. I’ve held off on ‘Easterly Winds’ as I’ve got that title on a Toshiba !
Ha, spelling. SWMBO. She Who Must Be Obeyed.
Thought so.
The Dexter Gordon is excellent.
Good - I’ve got a mono original but am interested to hear how this one sounds in stereo and with the Tone Poet treatment. A very good Dexter Gordon session.
Got this through today, unfortunately it’s been damaged in the post! The bio vinyl sounds ok, no complaints so far.
How are pressing and SQ?
SQ and pressing are superb. Aside from the cosmetic damage I am very pleased
Donald Byrd - Kofi, Blue Note/Tone Poet (2024)
Made up of tracks from the Electric Byrd sessions but tossed aside by Blue Note as DB puts it until 1994 this is a cracking record.
As so many time before and after Donald Byrd is way ahead of the game with these 4 self penned compositions if you heard it as a new release today it would still stand tall.
Excellent job by the Tone Poet crew just that mild disappointment on discovering it isn’t a gatefold with the beautiful session photos but that’s a very minor disappointment when considering the music.
Highlight of that album for me is the always excellent Lew Tabakin !
I have the 90s ‘Rare Groove’ vinyl of this one so unless it offers something extra which is exceptional, I’ll be passing on it.
Unfortunately I’m not able to offer you a case by case on this all I can tell you is it sounds fantastic and does the incredible music justice, although I’m biased when it comes to Donald Byrd.
Musically I would say it is so-so but the whole thing is an enjoyable listen. The quality of Byrd’s Blue Notes dropped off from about 1966/67 onwards IMO - seemed to have a bit of a lip problem with his trumpet technique, which never recovered.
Sonny Rollins “A Night At The Village Vanguard - The Complete Masters” Tone Poet.
What a stunning sound this has! Absolute perfect pressing.
Managed to escape the floor covering day of joy and pop into a record shop in Harrogate and purchased this. Was temped to buy the rerelease but this is the original and sounds excellent
Found myself in HMV today for the first time in years. Was shocked at how expensive most of the vinyl was. Although there were a few good deals. Picked up the remastered version of Grateful Dead’s American Beauty for £20 which was apparently reduced from £40 (lol). Pretty pleased with it. Was also impressed with how they try to upsell you an orange peel sleeve when you go to pay.
There were several Dead releases on sale. They also had the Madison Square Garden box set reduced to £75 which seemed a good price.
