Which album in your collection best-demonstrates stunningly good sound quality?

Kudos to @IainO for giving a shout-out in the Music Room Forum to the album Temptation by Chantal Camberland as having stunningly good sound quality. I have to wholeheartedly agree!

This makes me wonder about other albums that are sonically brilliant. If you had to pick one album from your collection that demonstrates stunningly good sound quality, which would it be?

Most modern ECM records are well recorded. So take your pick.

Overproduction kills sound quality in my opinion.

Oooh, tangential I know, but you could also try ‘Indigo’ by Chantal.

Not sure I’ve seen anyone else post about her on the forum before…

It’s difficult to point out a single album, however I’d mention the following ones:

  • Hiromi - Alive
  • Lorne Balfe - Mission Impossible: Fallout
  • Lee Ritenour - Overtime
  • Diana Krall - From this moment on
  • Gerald Albright - Sax for stax
  • Blicher Hemmer Gadd - It will be alright

Very different answers for digital vs analog material. For Vinyl LPs 60s era Jazz original recordings, and Carlos Kleiber 70s recording of Beethoven’s 5th.

For digital era, I think Paul Simon’s Graceland takes a lot of beating.

This 3 x CD set shows how digital sound engineering ought to be done.
