Look, this obviously aimed at myself and others who purchased a cd player. Your comments come across to me as patronising, so please keep such comments away from this discussion.
I’m very sorry. They really weren’t meant that way. I’ve genuinely been thinking about buying one since being made aware of the recent massive price drop. I posted a bit up the thread about being interested in how it compares. I also posted on your thread on the topic looking forward to hearing your impressions. The intent was entirely directed at myself, trying to persuade myself to stop looking, and representing my own internal dialogue on the topic.
My comment had nothing whatsoever to do with you
It was responding to @gthack and his situation.
Please retract your unecessary comment.
How was I supposed to know your response was to someone else?
You should quote them maybe put an emoji thing in with your comments and there’s less chance of a misunderstanding. I will of course edit my post, but only because I’m in a good mood
No need to apologise - it’s a misunderstanding that’s all - please keep your comments coming
Not in the same league as some of the players listed above, but I don’t play too many cds so i bought a Marantz 6007, which through my Nova has a lovely tone to it and plenty of detail.
I think it is great methodology to put the issues down on paper or in writing .
Things become clearer that way

rsch, in response to your inquiry regarding the Naim CDi, from what I have read over the past several years, most of the components in the CDi can be repaired or replaced. The laser arm on the CDi is the only part that may or may not be replaced depending on which version of the laser arm was used in the CDi.
The earlier version of the CDi with the CDM4 laser arm can be repaired, however, the later version of the CDi with CDM9 laser arm can’t be. Im sure that there are more technically knowledgeable people on this forum who can offer you a more indepth explanation to your question.
The issue with all Naim CD players is the mech and as far as I know, the Naim servicing approach is to swap out a failed mech for a new one; and now there are no new ones. But if you are determined to keep a Naim CD player running there are non Naim servicing options. And since Naim can’t replace the mech I don’t see that duscussing them here should be an issue.
I’ve repaired several out of production non Philips mechs before to keep some treasured vintage devices in tip top working order. Often the repairs fall into a few simpler categories:
- Recapping the control board in the mech itself.
- Repairing the spindle clamp.
Those actually involve opening up most mechs but recapping seems to resolve a lot of issues. Does need a repair shop with surface mount soldering skills though.
The motor and laser assembly are more terminal failures though and aren’t generally interchangeable… Though a drawer motor is (not relevant to Naim though).
Good job I’ve got a brand new Marantz on the way which i can’t wait to be delivered…
Thanks for the infornative post. On an aside I found it interesting that the remote control for a Rotel RCD 855 CD player will turn my CDi on and control its functions. Both CD players are from the early 1990’s.
Hope you enjoy your new Marantz CD player!
Just been to listen to the rega saturn mk3.
It sounded great, i was impressed by it.
I do have the marantz sa12 on back order so plan to compare the 2 when it arrives.
But the shop threw a big spanner in my cd player plan.
They showed me a 2nd hand accuphase cd player that i could just about afford.
It was way better than the rega.
Everything was clearer and yet fuller.
If you can afford the Accuphase go for it. Amplifier dependent.
I recently traded in all my Naim and (good as it was) Rega Saturn 3.
I am still amazed at how wonderful this combination sounds.
It has brought new life to my cd collection/addiction.
Wow, looks lovely…What model is the CDP?
Totally agree.
Almost bought the cdp there and then, but sense came to the rescue and told me to rest on it.
I am hoping to listen to the accuphase cdp with my naim and then later with an accuphase amp.
Cd dp450
Integrated e650
AudioMica cabling
Nice system. I think that is all the step above what i have been looking at. Even the same speaker cables.
You didnt get it from a place in south manchester did you?
Missed this thread…
I wanted to propose the new Gold Note CD-5…
