This is a Goldkapsel which’ll probably be more unctuous, powerful and complex than the “basic” 1998 Auslese, I have a few halves left. I had a slip of the brain back on release and somehow ordered 2 cases of full bottles of the “basic”. It’s a lovely lovely wine, still fresh, medium sweet, spicy, and I still have a lot left.

Edited to correct my memory of my stock, a quick check of my spreadsheet tells me I’ve been drinking the Goldkapps and this is my last half of my 6. But I do have 20 75cl white capsule bottles left.

It’s a bit embarrassing to have a spreadsheet, but in the spring 2020 lockdown I decided to organise the wine in my cellar after some years of basically drinking at random as I never knew where to find anything. So I now have a s/sheet identifying what is in each case (and the Eurocave and storage) and a PowerPoint showing where each case is against the walls (left wall German, back wall French, right wall mixed, largely Kiwi Pinot and Brunello).

It was bloody hard work, my house was built as a bungalow in the ‘50s hanging on a hillside in Yorkshire. In the ‘80s they extended by drilling into the hillside and putting a second floor below, the back of the ground floor is built into the hill. The cellar is the original bungalow cellar as far as I can tell, it’s accessed by a hatch a metre up the wall at the bottom of the stairs, and is about 5ft (1.52m) high, so after 30 minutes of stooping each day my back was going and I had to stop for the day). On the positive side it is a steady 14 Celsius, and with an annual small steam generator run the humidity is good, I have opened wines I put there in 2008 and the corks are perfect.

Have you tried a Romanian pinot noir? Nice wine as it goes.

1996 Savigny Les Beaune VV Maison Roche de Bellene
Tonight’s wine, an aged village wine, 30 minutes in decanter before starting. Lovely aged colour, bricky orange. Nose started as sweet fruits, strawberry and redcurrant with a hint of vanilla and pepper, as I finish the last glass 4 hours on it’s strawberry and vanilla. (I’d be surprised if they oaked-aged a village wine, so not sure where the vanilla comes from.) On the palate sweet strawberry fruit with some darker red fruit notes, vanilla and a bit of spice, good early attack and a light mid-palate, no real length. A bit of strawberry perfume stays in the mouth. A quite light wine, enjoyable, surprisingly sweet for Burgundy, I’d have guessed Central Otago, but amazing quality for a 25 year old village wine from Savigny.
I have looked back at a note I posted here 2 years ago, same sweetness and lack of mid-palate, the secondary fruit is a bit darker than I noted then.

I’ve tried a few and enjoyed them, but not found any I’d think of as top-class, I’d love recommendations. I have bought quite a lot of New Zealand Pinot, mainly Escarpment wines, but they’re getting to be pretty expensive now.
