Thanks for the clarification, Rod. It will be easier to find in the WAoW now.
One wine that I rarely come across (in Canada), is an Aglianico from Taurasi. They are delicious when nicely aged.
I had a few 2006s in my cellar which we consumed in and around 2018 or so. Delightfully different, with much terrior. Wish I could order direct from the vineyards, but just not possible here.
Salut
After the Beaujolais Niuveau yesterday it’s serious stuff tonight. Just felt in the mood for a posh Brunello and wow this just delivered in spades. Sure I could have sold it and made a bit of profit but then I would have missed out on such a lovely glass.
Just bought 12 bottles of Moric Reserve Blaufrankisch 2020 from Lay and Wheeler – £28/btl in bond. Will keep it there for now.
A 2019 Bourgogne Blanc ‘Vieille Vignes’ by Fichet. Drinking beautifully at the moment. Had it with a Cornish brill that I pan fried on the bone
Thai lunch today in Manchester and our theme was Antipodean Riesling, though we had a few interlopers. Starting with the Kumeu River Cremant which is 2/3 Chardonnay and 1/3 Pinot noir and an extremely well made fizz made using the Champagne method. Of our first Riesling flight, the stand out was the Pegasus Bay 2009 Aged Riesling - a little R/S and some pleasing petrol notes make this a delight to drink and worked very nicely with our starters. The two Polish Hills were hardly aged but both very accessible which may be down to warmer harvests? The Felton Road also very good. Our sole semillon was also very distinguished. Final bit of fun with pink moscato from Stella Bella - nothing serious just enjoyable.
This is the last bottle of 6 I bought in 2010 en primeur. Taken out the wine fridge and double decanted left alone for 3 hours.
It is translucent garnet with a brown rim.
There is leather and blackcurrant in the nose. The palate has some sweet fruit that dries out quickly with very smooth integrated tannins. There is an aftertaste of leather, pencil and some blackcurrant that goes on about 30 seconds. Very smooth.
God that sounds good makes my house red with dinner at the pub tonight seem a little inadequate.
Dinner at Morito on Hackney Road. A couple of gems on the wine list. The 2006 Urbina was very nice, tannins are nicely balanced with balsamic, nutmeg and dark cherries. Priced extremely well. The Phinca Hapa was a skin contact orange wine. Paired well with the tapas starters and finished with the dessert. Both wines priced around £60. No wine on the list even close to £100. Nice to see.
The 2021 vintage of Martin Wassmer’s wonderful German Pinot Noir. Such good vfm. Had with roast chicken
A celebration of Thanksgiving resulted in an excellent selection of US wines to accompany our very good lunch menu kicked off with the lightest of gougeres that were appropriately bedecked.
The flight of Chardonnays were very much what I expected for Californian examples: big and bold with some oak but also finesse and stylish. Quite delicious especially with time in the glass.
The best of the first red flights was the grace grenache - lighter style and very elegant. Increasingly popular winemaking style for which I am very happy.
The Cabernet flight served with a rib eye roast and needed the food to bring them to life. The older Phelps Insignia ‘93 and Jekel ‘82 were both in a superb place. My Ridge Santa Cruz ‘06 very enjoyable and stood up well to the competition.
A lovely lunch and maybe I could get to enjoy Thanksgiving especially without a turkey!
La Trompette Chiswick?
Correct David - a super one * restaurant that hosts a monthly lunch for the denizens of a wine forum, usually with a theme though occasionally like next month when we take over the whole restaurant, we bring anything we want which is a real challenge for those putting tables together and selecting a menu!
It is one of my favourite dining places along with Chez Bruce in Wandsworth - owned by the same people.
Pigeoulet - Vaucluse 2022
“It’s appealingly full and generous in style, but not remotely hefty, and brings waves of elegant energy and freshness to Blue Note records with jazzy notes of spiced up chords and funky beats”
Rare for me to drink French wine but this is very nice indeed
This is not mine, I translate and share from a friend in Valencia, because I find it excepcional.
Very evolved, but it holds the body very well. It reminds me a lot of Sherry, Fino, Amontillado and all that… without tannins. Dry, very dry. Coffee, a lot of coffee in the nose. In the mouth, plain. But with spectacular acidity. I didn’t expect it.
They drank it yesterday.
The only 64 Rioja I have tried is Tondonia and that was stunning. Opportunities like this rarely come along and when they do - it is just so special.
This is lovely. An old vine Gigondas from the Wine Society. We don’t eat meat, which I imagine it would go very well with, so we had a rich pasta sauce instead, and then some cheese. We could get a taste for this.
We quite like the Malterdinger Chardonnay. How was the Spätburgunder?
