Oh, I think we share the same strong point
Fingers crossed, Pete!
Have a nice weekend and a fantastic Syrah
Cheers
@bruss joking aside, isn’t it amazing how a wine, food dish or an album can conjure up so many memories, good or bad! Sorry, now back to the topic
Martin
We were doing the same thing here in Ontario at the time. I hadn’t met my wife yet, but I’d met her brother who of course ended up being the catalyst. The other slightly sparkling Portuguese Rose that was available at the time was called Casal Mendes. It was very similar and just as good and the same price as well. Sometimes he and I would sit down in a bar and order a bottle of one of these instead of beer.
Anyway, also many good memories and from the following posts it appears the same went on in many countries.
Very cool.
I guess it is not a Brompton.
And I noticed that I confused Domäne Wachau with Domäne Krems. Domäne Krems is a brand of ‚Spar’ supermarket and indeed not that great.
TWS Exhibition South African Chenin Blanc 2022. The only wine that Jancis R gave a ‘vvg’ rating to in her recent tasting. I really , really like this wine.
@Quickben - this is made by Chris Alheit in Hemel en Aarde and is £14-50 compared to the Secateurs which is now £17-50. This is a much better wine IMO
Yes the label is totally anachronistic and it’s one of those wines that reveals new nuances with every swallow. Wonderful wine
Mine is being delivered this week. Hoping to catch up with Butch while in SA if the stars align. If not I have a tasting with Eben Sadie and a few other winemakers to compensate.
The winery to chose in Krems is Toni Zöhrer, he makes spectacular Veltliner, that doesn‘t cost you a fortune
Knoll is highest level in Austria, every wine is just delicious. If you could grab any Vinothekenfüllung you should not hesitate
Thanks for the recommendation, I will definitely try it out. Also, Krems isn’t far from me.
Nice, where are you living? I know loads of wineries and Veltliner in Niederösterreich, Regarding Blaufränkisch I have several contacts to excellent companies like ET etc. in Burgenland. I love both grapes and for me they are the flagship of Austrian Wine.
When it comes to Roter Veltliner the wines of Josef Fritz in Wagram are exceptional, he has ever been making fantastic Chardonnays.
Well, I would phrase it like this: If you take the highway from Vienna towards Germany, you would pass relatively close to me quite soon.
ET = Ernst Triebaumer? I must confess, I only know Roter Veltliner from Leth. And I don’t know Josef Fritz.
You are right, it‘s Ernst. Gerhard, his son, is such a Fine guy, I‘ve always adored these tastings with him in the cellar, when it was agreably cold in these hot Rust Summers.
So you are near Baden?
Josef Fritz is called „Mr. Roter Veltliner“ in the scene, just try one of his wines, you won‘t regret.
Well, Baden would be the highway from Vienna to Italy. I mean the other highway, heading west. No wine is cultivated in our area. Too much forest, too humid, too cool - which isn’t necessarily a disadvantage in summer.
I’ve already added Josef Fritz to my wine wishlist. Once I’ve emptied a row on the cellar shelves, I’ll stock up with his wines.
Last night’s wine up in Scotland. First time I’ve had the Pietradolce Barbagalli. I described it to my Italian/Scottish friend as stellar. Will try to track some down. Sicilian reds always impress IMO. Finished the evening with a dram of Mortlach 16 year old.

Sounds like Wienerwald
Vinothek Fohringer in Spitz used to sell some Wines of Fritz and these people are very kind and experts for all kinds of Austrian wines
You could buy them bottle wise
I once had a spontaneous Wachau tasting with the Senior Boss and it was very educational. His Knowledge about all different vineries and varieties in the region is extraordinary
