Been tied up with work and leisure travel and a nasty chest infection so haven’t posted recently, but here are some wines from a trip to Austria

Perfect cold weather wine - Faugeres, Les Bastides d’Alquier 2010. Very ripe tannins now and still plenty of spicy fruit - delicious

I hope the chest infection has cleared Pete.

Lovely berry nose, quite warm, lovely taste rich warm fruit, very full with ripe soft tannins. Delicious, but too easy to drink.

the great part of drinking wine is sometimes you get a bottle and it takes your breath away, this has been in a cellar for a few years, son & his partner were home last night, lamb pie so I thought this needs to be drunk, what a wine had the pleasure (of working with Michel for some years) his wines are sometimes a little dispointing and sometimes sublime, this wine was exceptional - little know fact on Michel is loves aboriginal art and is one of the most avid collectors in the world and he loves some soil in OZ, map below

12 + years old from 2012 vintage and showing beautifully

I took a punt on this at Waitrose. I’ve never tasted Arneis before, but do have a bit of a thing for northern Italian wines. It’s lovely, dry and full bodied, and perfect with roasted fish.

Lovely Rioja, fragrant, with a juicy dark fruit palate, still quite taut. Opened up a bit at the table, soft tannins and a good mouthfeel texture. Excellent with the beef casserole.

Sorry for such long-term absence. Have been inundated with stuff all year. Mostly good, which is nice.

I thought Pete especially might be interested to see the wines I got to taste at a winemaker lunch on Friday in Hong Kong.

Lunches which end at 8pm are usually good…

Hope to be fully ‘back’ soon. Cheers

Welcome back. Got at least one each those, use to love Jackmans ( the first wine of theirs I tasted) but the last bottle I opened wasn’t to their usual high standard.

This won’t be confused with any Super Tuscans but it’s bang on for a midweek supper.

An interest few days here. Thursday being Thanksgiving so a good excuse for a US themed lunch at La Trompette in Chiswick. A lot of Ridge on our table! I was very happy that the 2006 Monte Bello delivered so much. A great selection of wine and great fun.

Then Saturday we had a Thai lunch in Manchester. Alsace and Austrian wine theme. Some of them struggled and the 1993 Geyerhof Gruner was just not right. As a recent museum release from the Wine Society I was at least able to get a refund. I was much happier with the Brundlmeyer Riesling. Some similarities to Clare Valley and austere but stunning. A great tasting.

Mum’s 92nd birthday today so we had some family over for an early “Christmas lunch”. Drunk the last of the 2016 Craggy Range Te Muna Road - still great!

Happy birthday to Mum.

I’ve just seen that Nicolas Potel died in the summer, that’s a real shame. He was always great at tastings and his merchant and domaine wines were superb and great value.

Very attractive fizz, aromatic, nice mouthfeel, toasty with appley fruit, and a long aftertaste. Very enjoyable, and great quality. I will be purchasing more.

Very ripe and expressively fruity Sonoma wine. Very upfront, and full and intense palate, tannins very soft, with a streak of acidity to balance it. Quite full but very approachable. A blend of Merlot, Zinfandel and Sangiovese.
