enjoy the Qunita de Malvedos should be superb, 2001 was a bordline declaration year, but then the houses thought the market would not accept back to back vintages following the 2000 release

Soave acquired a bit of a naff reputation a few decades back but I think produces the most fabulous wines at not stupid prices. I don’t know that particular one but will have a look now!

Pieropan Soave is one we have every now and again. Seems pretty reliable.

La Rocca by Pieropan is my fave

Went to a local Jeroboam wine tasting recently and whilst there were some really good wines, the only one I came away with was possibly the cheapest. 2024 GianniTessari ‘Scalette’ Soave Classico.

An early morning dash into town to the Butcher to collect a turkey for Christmas Day lunch followed by deciding the wines for the day. This is what I have picked. The Marsannay will be interesting (there’s a few bottles), and the Vina Real 2010 I know is lovely but this my last bottle, and the Taittinger has a bit of age on it, which I like. The Chablis, I have no idea…

We enjoy the Chablis you’ve chosen. Hope you do too. Merry Christmas, with appreciation for all you do.

Last night’s wine. Needed decanting. Cherries (bordering a bit on rumtopf at first). Served with beef tacos, homemade guacamole followed by a slide show put on by our 3 boys who discovered the kit when going through some boxes we rescued from their grandparents home before it was sold. Main feature was when Mrs Pistol was 3 years old and moved from Calgary to Queenscliffe, Australia including the Neptune ceremony when they crossed the equator. Lovely evening.

Mrs IDAK wanted 100 ml port for the trifle. I only had this magnum in the cellar, should have gone out to off licence and bought a cheap port instead. Question. Now that it has been breached, how long will it be good to drink?

Christmas wines for our southern hemisphere celebrations in the heat. An excellent Chardonnay from Hawkes bay followed by 2 grower champagnes and a vintage 2021 Beaujolais from Desvignes. Aforementioned port should match the trifle very well. Happy Christmas to all from windy Wellington.

About two to three weeks

A week at the most. What a shame you had to open that beautiful magnum of port at a young age

2016 was a good vintage for Taylors, wet around spring, later bud burst than normal, Taylors picked late in almost perfect conditions and were rewarded, I would personally only decant what you would like to consume and then leave in Magnum and then re decant as needed, re re cork, air is a great friend to wine but if you would prefer to drink over couple lf weeks, enjoy 2016 is one of favs from the 2015, 16 & 17 run

Son’s 30th yesterday, to commence Bollinger. Rose en Magnum which was showing really well, had the Mag for a couple of years so about pefect, did not last long

had kept this back Fonseca Guimarans 1995 from his birth year, 3 farms (Qunita’s) from Fonseca which make Guimaraens which is produced when no vintage is delcared, so called Single Qunita, foot troad grapes, aged in wood for a couple of years and then in bottle, these IMO are some of the best value Vintage Ports and drink a little sooner than classic years

Does anyone use a cellar management app like CellarTracker, Vivino or Invintory?

Need to get a handle on all my wines and wondered if anyone had a recommendation. I’m interested particularly in being able to locate wines in my racks with drinking windows, and other basic data, which I’m not sure Vivino can do but might be wrong.

I have used Cellartracker since 2008. You can use it for free but the full features are only delivered with the paid version. It is invaluable, both as a means of managing an ever growing cellar and the number of tasting notes indicating how a particular wine may be showing. If you subscribe to Jancis or Vinousnfir example, you can access their tasting notes too (and many other professional sources). It also links into wine searcher if you are looking for particular wines.

Latium of the great Eugenio Morini! I hope to be at his place in a few days, to replenish my store.

Two weeks if you keep it in the fridge.

Might be a reflection of my palate at the time but we cracked a bottle in 1998 of Gould Campbell 1966 purchased at the BBR duty free shop in LHR T3 and it lasted a number of months.
