A friend from Canada and his family used our flat over New Years and he left us a couple of bottles of wine including this magnum from St John which was on his bucket list of restaurants for this trip (first time back in the UK since 1999). The wine was decent – think it would have paired better with a Sunday roast (we cooked an eclectic journey through the Ottolenghi Simple cookbook and a very good ribeye).

Yes, I see that TWS currently has the 2024 Thymiopoulos Xinomavro available. I may have to order some.

Today I cooked roast beef for Sunday lunch and opened my last bottle of 2016 Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet, which went down extremely well.

A loving spouse will not only purchase the Durand as the most marvellous expression of her love but also the cork remover/extractor that opens up inside the bottle capturing the cork fragments and closes up as you remove the implement.

Both have been used this past fortnight.

This is a really interesting one - an Austrian wine called Pannobile by Heinrich. Thing is, it’s 12 years old but costs £15 to buy now. It’s 55% Zweigelt and 45% Blaufrankisch. And it has a glass stopper rather than a cork :grimacing:
I’ve given it to friends and some love it and some hate it. I love it but only get it if you like ‘funky’ wines

I just find this wine too ‘sunburnt’. I’ve tried many times but can’t get on with it.
By ‘funky’ I meant getting into natural wine/toe cheese territory :laughing:

The Musar has a lot of body. I paired it with cheese such as Epoiusse.

It is very “marmite”. I love it, my wife hates it.

Cucao Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, Colchagua Valley 2022

A fresh, elegant twist on Cabernet, inspired by the more refined styles found in Europe, with structure and balance. Alvaro Espinosa is a talented winemaker, firmly focused on getting character and individuality into his wines.

Today a rainy trip to the wine merchant to stock up with the usual fare, plus this impulse purchase Chilean cabernet sauvignon odd-bins bottle to try something different.

First trail pleasant bouquet and promising sip but far too temperature cold - too soon after the trip home.
I’ve filled a glass to stand in a warm place for an hour while i get on with the pasta dish :face_savoring_food:

Montefalco holds a special place in my heart. Mrs HH’s sister lives across the valley and you can see Montefalco from her house. Sagrantino is a wonderful grape, local to Montefalco, full of brambly fruit and a bit wild. You rarely see it in the UK, but the Wine Society has this one. Highly recommended.

popped to BBR for some wine for supper. Took a punt on this-rather good. Wife says, best white for a long time! Lovely surprise, old world rather than new world flavours

I came here to post about tonight’s dinner wine, and found I’d forgotten to post last week’s wines which I’d noted. My best friend came round for dinner and a movie (house is getting closer to liveable), so we had a takeaway and claret.

Lascombes 2000

Opened for 4 hours. Dark ruby colour, dense nose of cassis, cherry and plum and some woodiness with a hint of violet. Palate was very dense, good acidity, clunky tannins, dark red fruits and some earth with (oddly for a clumsy wine) a nice perfume of red fruits and violets, it never really came round. It’s a drinkable wine, but is not special now. I had a few bottles from this case in its youth, it was more attractive then, I’m not convinced that it will open to a great wine, but I’ll give it a few years, despite the 25 years it felt young, fruit still muddled, oak showing a bit and tannins still youthful.

2008 Clos Du Marquis

Ruby colour with a hint of bricking at the edge. Lovely nose, cassis, plum, some blackberry, pencil. Palate is similar, good acidity and tannin, dark fruits, cassis, plum, black cherry, hint of mint, earth, nice feel in the mouth. Very classy wine.
