Which wine are you drinking? Tell us about it

A nice selection of wine to go with the roast beef, and then raspberry cheesecake. Good fizz to begin, and an easy Port to finish. Helped talk about the wedding issues.

Been a while since I posted – tied up with work and travel and some family stuff. So catching up. Above pic is from the end of our annual Guy’s Ski week in early March - 8 of us. The wines were as follows:

Kusuda Syrah 2016

Maison Leroy, Bourgogne Rouge 2015

Pierre Boisson Meursault 2013

Domaine Dujac Puligny Montrachet 2018 (a recent distressed sale purchase)

Chateau dYquem 1996

Johanneshof Reinisch Holzspur Pinot Noir (can’t recall the year)

Chateau Montrose 2009

Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay 2023 (nice for a pre-dinner white for those who did not partake in a corpse reviver)

Le Dome 1996 (While it had mixed reviews in the early years, I am such a fan of what I believe was Maltus’ first vintage and see that Justerinis just listed a bunch of 1996 today from a private cellar sale)

Cos D’Estournel 2005

Rhys Anderson Valley Chardonnay 2019

Domaine Marc Sorrel, Le Greal Hermitage, 2012

Domaine Du Pegau Cuvee Reservee CdP 2015 (this and the Greal were two of the highlights of the week)

Weingut Dorli Muhr Ried Spitzerberg Blaufrankisch 2019 (another pre-dinner favourite)

Bessin-Tremblay Le Fourchaume Chablis 2022

Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine 2 (Shiraz) 2005

Vega Sicilia Unico 2006 (excellent)

Roagna Paje Barbaresco 2016 (this was our first night – brought 6 bottles from London and only 1 made it down to the cellar. Paired with some yummy veal cannelloni

Didier Dagueneau Silex Pouilly Fume 2010 (yum, intense but dry paired with Arctic char)

Jean Chauvenet Nuit St Georges Les Vaucrains, 2013

Domaine de Montille Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2013 (with Halibut). This too was excellent

Domaine G Roumier Morey Saint Denis Clos de la Bussiere 2012

Cheers - they went beautifully together !

Lurking in my cellar are wines I should have drunk …

No excuses, except my data base is corrupted. So after completing my steps for the day I went rummaging. I knew I had some Graves somewhere, but it was more accessible than thought. It was a pleasure to drink, but nothing outstanding, a good compliment to an asparagus risotto.

The bourg is silky but uninspiring; although it suits my mood and the cheese left over from over indulgence yesterday.

Wow! What a line up.

Thank you @BobbyYork. Am reaping the harvest from purchases made back in the early/mid ‘10’s knowing I would need to stack the cellar in the house we were building so for the most part, pricing was decent.

Friends round for dinner.

To start we had the Digby Blanc de Blancs made from Chardonnay from 2018, 19 and 20. This was blended by Dermot Sugrue ( the best winemaker in England IMO) so great value.

Then we had the 2023 A Pórtela which is a Godello from Galicia made by Alberto Orte. An incredible wine which Jancis Robinson called Spain’s answer to Puligny.

Finally a 2015 Gigondas made by Chateau de St Cosme who make the best wines in the region IMO.

A great night

While unpacking I found a 2008 (the year I moved to Yorkshire, got a cellar and took all the wines from bond to cellar at home) stock certificate from Armit, Roumier les Cras was £25-£30 IB around the turn of the century. Their estimated market value as of Jan 2008 was £30-40 IB. The price of top maker Burgundy has risen incredibly in less than 20 years.

Edited when I noticed the market value was stated to be for 12 packs.

@eoink Now that is a line-up! Do you have much/any left?

Hi Peter, I have all 12 of the Clos des Ducs which should be reaching peak soon, 6 of the La Chapelle, about half of the Les Cras ‘98 and ‘01, the village and minor premier cru Burgundies have gone (the Chassagne sadly suffered from premox), the ‘01 clarets were all delicious and have gone (the GPL was fantastic). There’s a note above about the 2000 Lascombes, I have 8 left I think, it’s still not integrated well.

I don’t normally like Rose wines, but this is grabs your palate. Juicy strawberry and redcurrant fruit, but not totally dry. Depth and freshness, good for a rose, but this is from a Calabrian estate that produce superb wines. Southern Italy gives so much for what you pay.

Excellent textbook NZ Sauvignon Blanc from Grove Mill. And a bargain from TWS, and even more so from the Co-Op who have it on offer at the moment. Get it while you can..
