Short question: Which preamp & poweramp combination of Naim gives the fastest attack in the bass response?
Have you tried other speaker cables? Borrow some Oephi cables and get a nice surprise and don’t think about the price. It’s free to borrow. Those naca is thumping bass but no where near the definition and attach you can get with your current system IMO. I look at great cables as black box upgrades. That’s what great cables can do (have had similar system as you).
Probably Statements, but perhaps not really suitable for most of us.
I’d have normally said 282/300 then 552/500 but the 282/300 no longer exists. So your only available options that anyone has heard outside of a show are 222/250 and the 552/500.
The now diacontinued 282 is a bit of a dog off the leash. But as always, you can make any Naim amp sound relaxed or aggressive depending on speaker pairing.
112/150. Next question please.
I find improvements to the source provides excellent improvements in this regard. Most recently a cartridge upgrade made big improvements in bass response, among other things
I think your current pre and power will be pretty impressively snappy and tight.
Room and listening position I’d say would have largest influence on the quality of sub bass and bass response.
Your speakers and their placement probably next.
Then speaker cable although for groove and being a match with Naim gear NACA5 is hard to beat. Yes you can undoubtedly get better clarity and detail but that probably comes down to personal taste.
Just MHO and of course YMMV.
Well put Tapp
I totally agree with listening position, room treatment and speaker position. Depends how free we are to fill the room with treatment but it has to be applied correctly and can be difficult to get right.
When we had 272/XPSDR/250DR the interconnect between 272/250 made a difference in this respect, but I see you’ve already upgraded that.
SuperLumina speaker cables tightened the bass, but only very very slightly - the biggest noticeable difference with those was better treble detail. For the rather large investment I doubt they would solve your perceived issue.
It took a 300DR to get a big change in both bass weight, slam and timing.
I feel the same way. Your source plays a huge part in the end result.
I’ve never heard Statement with anything other than Focals which for right or wrong always influences my judgement, so I’m minded to say 552/500 or 282/250 with Kudos Titans or Neat Ultimatums. In fact last night I was listening to Blue Train on vinyl and Paul Chambers bass lines on Locomotion were breathtaking.
I have recently found that removing the room from the sound results in fast, ‘attacking’ and comprehensible bass. I use Space Optimisation, but others use room treatments. I think that I am now hearing proper bass!
Yes, it might be time… What model do you have?
Ascendance 2x3m. I believe Lounge can be a lot of sound quality for the money. I have also evaluated Transcendance.
Not sure the 282 ‘has been’ discontinued. Likely to be, maybe…
Still listed on the Naim website…
Sounds good What made you go with Ascendance and not Transcendance?
System synergy. Had a different system back then but found the Ascendance bit more relaxed. Transcendance will show the system weaknesses more if any in your system. Tr is close to Sarum T in performance. I’m gonna evaluate Tr speaker cables again down the road again since my system has changed completely. Awesome cables IMO. I also evaluated Tr against Sarum T DIN DIN and they had very similar character so Oephi even though expensive is better value than Sarum T.
I guess I’ll have to contact Joakim so he can send some speaker cables for evaluation. Thanks Slamdam
The 282, along with the remaining Classic boxes, are to be discontinued at the end of this month - so anyone who wants to buy new needs to get their skates on.
It’s like dogs and their owners. If you visit a hifi show and there is aggression shown by another visitor, good chance it’s a 112 owner. The Pace, Rhythm Attack and Timing of it are quite extraordinary.
