More poor tennis from a women’s match. Unforced errors after unforced errors and the only variety coming from Sabalenka. Raducanu is not in Sabalenka’s league and it’s annoying, as usual, when the crowd hardly applaud Sabalenka’s incredible winning shots. Murray all over again🤮
One of my brothers used to read a magazine called Speed & Power when he was about twelve. This evening I hoped that craft and guile could overcome speed and power. On this evening’s showing, sadly not. A champion’s performance from Sabalenka. And we thought a good one from Raducanu.
Yes it was a very entertaining match. Raducanu played well for long periods but the quality of the world number one shone through in the end. A pity the standard didn’t meet the requirements of some people on this thread.
I thought Emma Radacanu played well. There is no shame in losing to Aryna Sabalenka. I thought that on occasion, Radacanu’s shot selection was questionable. She appeared to be drawn into too many cross court forehand to forehand rallies, which she invariably lost. While Mark Petchey is doing a good job in coaching her, he lacks the personal experience of playing at the very highest level of competition. It didn’t really happen for Andy Murray until he recruited Ivan Lendl into his team. While it may not have been the friendliest of relationships, Lendl taught Murray how to win at that highest level of competition. Perhaps Emma Radacanu needs someone like that in her team, maybe Andy Murray himself. Then again, if the rumours are true and she is dating Carlos Alcaraz, that certainly won’t do her any harm. Probably wouldn’t help a blossoming relationship though.
A great, intense, match. Of course the crowd were partisan, but Sabalenka fed of that, and the home support was nothing compared with Paris and NY. I think Emma’s peak raking is somewhere around 28-35 but she had chances last night.
I didn’t watch ‘our Emma’, or is she back to being Radacanu now she has lost? I saw the match before and she was pretty good. As has been said maybe her natural best ranking is about 20 or so, and there is nothing wrong with that.
I did watch Alcaraz v Struff. Entertaining stuff. Alcaraz seems to have about 4 options for every shot. Not sure he always picks the right one but that is part of the fun. Struf never took a step back, always positive, lots of net play. Enjoyable grass court tennis if not that intense.
From what I have seen so far Djokovic and Sinner are in very fine form, and untested. I’d still rather watch Alcaraz.
Different, but I know what you mean. Federer had a certain grace though. Alcaraz more emotional, and looks like he is enjoying himself with is refreshing in an elite sportsperson.
I think I am missing the line judges. I quite liked the players getting wound up (sometimes deliberately) and also the review system (as in cricket). I think the human element in umpiring/refereeing adds something in all sport. ‘Perfect’ adjudication is an illusion anyway. Luddite maybe.
