Finally sitting down to post a note about our new Whest PS.30RDT SE phono stage. Flat out one of the best audio upgrades we’ve done over the years - in no way minor - as good as any single change.
We have been using recapped MC phono cards in the 32.5. Perfectly fine and straight ahead. Moving to the Whest is like going from mono to stereo - far more detail, delineation, and soundstage, without any loss of PRAT. The old adage of “hearing your records for the first time” is true here. A beloved track for me - “Crossing the Corpus Callosum” on the 2nd Bass Desires album - revealed a number of details I hadn’t heard before. And that is pretty much true generally - it is just so fun to hear everything - like a whole new record collection.
One thing I was somewhat concerned about was how lesser quality records would sound - I avoid buying new vinyl based on environmental considerations - and of course quality of older records is just so all over the map. Generally, though, I really like the Whest with lesser recordings - it is revealing and true, to me simply presenting what is there, part of the historical record.
A special mention of James Henriot, Whest’s owner, is more than due - he was really communicative and helped line me up the right model for our system - and even helped troubleshoot at length some system issues that had nothing to do with his preamp (other than it being highly sensitive - you will want to keep it away from power supplies!).
Fun fact: the Whest name is a hybrid from West London where they are located and the H in James’ last name: W(h)est.
If you are considering, don’t hesitate!!
