Mines quiet Simple

School days
Technics SV ??

first steps
NAD 370 (still used on my Sons Sytem)

Naim
200 (2006 - 2017)
300 (2017-2018)
300DR (2018 - current end of journey AMP )

I understand your hesitation IB and I would certainly want to hear for myself how a $45k NAP500 could compete against a pair of 1Kw $30k Bryston 28B3s!

Early days - Technics SA-150
90s - NAD integrated (forget the model)
Arcam Alpha 9 preamp with Adcom amplifier
Arcam Pre with McCormack DNA-1
Nait5i
Supernait
Supernait 2, eventually added HiCap DR.

1968 RSC TA12 Mk111 came with Garrard SP25 Mk11, Goldring CS90 and a pair of Dorchester speakers. All came from Sheffield branch of R.S.C. High Fi Centres Ltd (national chain) at a cost of £58 for the lot. You may laugh but this system made the most impression on me of all systems I have had - following on from a Dansette record player this was a revelation. I never knew sound like this existed and it started my love of hi-fi from that day on.
Mid 1970’s changed the amp to a Sony TA-70 which served me well for a long time until
Late 1980 changed to Musical Fidelity B200 which was a great amp and warmed the room at the same time
2011 Naim Unitiqute plus Naim NAP100
2019 NAC 272 and NAP 250DR
2023 Atom HE
Other components obviously changed along the way (LP12 replaced the Garrard in 1983 for a cost of £380) but that’s for a different thread.

Hmmm, this another challenging list to deal with! Have to think back to what my first “real” system was back in high school.

Amplifiers in the main system have gone something like this:
Pioneer SX 700 (I think)
Yamaha Receiver (can not remember the model)
Hafler DH220 built from a kit (with an Audible Illusions tube preamp)
Now the “Niaming” starts (circa 1984):
NAP250
NAP135 x2
NAP135 x6 (went active with the big Linn Isobariks)
NAP135 x4 (change to active SBLs)
NAP300 (passive SBLs)
NAP300DR x2 (back to active SBLs; NAP300s upgraded to DR)
NAP300DR x3 (active NBLs; current main system)

Other concurrent dalliances in 2nd and 3rd systems (no particular order):
Various combinations of CB and Olive 250/135/140/90 (all sold off)
NAIT 1
NAIT 2 (still have)
NAIT 3
NAP100 (still have)
NAP150 (still have)
NAP200
NAP250DR (still have)
CJ MV50 (still have)
Nakamichi ST7A MK1

I am sure there are others that I have forgotten about
This is what happens when you have been playing with stereo equipment for over 40 years

1971 Sinclair Project 60
1974 Metrosound ST60
1975 Pioneer SA7700
1978 Naim NAC12/NAP160
1980 Naim NAC12S/NAP250
1988 Musical Fidelity MVT and 2 x P270
2015 Naim SuperUniti

Well here is a simple path through the amplifiers, the speakers are even more simple, but speakers are for another thread I guess.

1979 and for the next ten years I think:

Various Leak amplifiers, all second hand, as indeed all my HiFi had been second hand with just a couple of exceptions.

Leak Stereo 20 (Valve of course)

Leak Stereo 30 (Germanium Transistors)

Leak Stereo 70

1988 and remaining to this day

Naim NAC 62 and Naim NAP 140 (Chrome bumper of course)

A few years later I added a Naim HiCAP listed in the back pages of the local paper, also remaining to this day

Recently when I had a pc desktop in another room, and the ability to add sound (music) I wanted to improve the sound quality, and I have had a few small amplifiers to use with the pc and small speakers on the desk and I have tried Russ Andrews Rave1, Ampastic Mini, Temple Audio Bantam and the Bantam One, and Rega Brio. Some of these have variously found their way to my son.

Now I spend as much time with music from the pc, I am thinking of another record player in the second room…

Since the 1980’s Naim 62/HiCap/140 I have not had the desire to “upgrade” as the sound is very good, and even so I never had the money to spend. I have thought myself fortunate to have managed to have a good sound system in the first place, and I think contentment matters.

2009 superline

2015 NAC552DR
2016 NAP 500 and DRed 2 months later
2019 Stageline N
2021 MuSo QB2, does that count?

I’ve never sold an amp, unless you count the Nait, traded in for what I paid for it.

The Sansui lost a ps CAP around 2014 whilst doing duties in the diningroom. The ps board was the last to come out and involved some desoldering, not beyond my abilities or tools but I couldn’t be bothered.

The Rega Cursa/Maia I’ve given to my sister in law.

The 282/Hi/250-2 are held in reserve and might see use again in a second home but are due a service first, they’ll stay non DR.
The supercap powers the superline.

Brilliant memory😁

Love this - mine is pretty simple:

1984 - musical fidelity A1

Lost my mojo for a while…

2017- Incatec The Claymore

Back in 1972 I built a Sinclair Project 60 amp with my mate Pete. A very dodgy build, but it worked.
1975 a Sansui AU4900… a serious upgrade from the Sinclair.
1979 A NAP42 _NAP110…Serious HiFi
Added a Snapps

1985 Nap72 + Hi Cap +NAP250

2020 NAC 285 + HiCap dr +NAP250dr… the story so far.

Right now I’m content and probably going to stay as is…probably… but y’never know.

I thought I recognised that: the power amp is a modification of the Hitachi 7 transistor MOSFET poweramp application circuit. It’s a design that performs much better than one would expect and can be made to perform even better with a few modifications (e.g. preventing driver latch-up on fast transients).

Hello all, my first post here.

I like these what’s been your journey threads; so interesting to see what paths people have taken. I’ve not attained the exalted summits reached by some others, but am pleased with where I am at the moment. (For now!) Anyway…

1982 10WPC kit bought from an advert in an electronics mag. From a company called RTVC based in Watford IIRC. Based on TDA2006 chips I think it was. Sounded better than my parents’ Sharp receiver.

1983/4 Sony TA-AX2. Nice looker, but not that happy with the 4ohm speakers I made using Audax drive units which again might have been from RTVC. I managed to wipe out one channel c.1986 when prodding around inside with a multimeter.

1986 Sony replaced with another home build job, using components from Maplin I think. Possibly TDA2030. OK but no slam or deep bass to speak of.

1988 or so: put the rather feeble amp from my parents’ old Ultra record player into a box. Still using the Audax-based home-made speakers.

1992 Work colleague sold me his Rotel pre. RC850? I mated it to an interesting shoebox-style Yamaha power amp and small Yamaha bookshelf speakers. Probably not bad but I hadn’t discovered speaker stands at this point, and in any cases my sources were not great (Sony DD t/table and Yamaha portable CDP)

1993/4 I sold the amps to a mate, whilst I went back to being an impoverished student. A JVC microsystem (UX-T1??) tided me over.

1998 Got the bug again, bought Denon receiver. Not great though. (Also Yamaha CDX 493 and B&W 601s)

2001 Cambridge Audio C500 + P500. Probably better than I thought at the time. Warning about low impedance speakers with the P500 condemned it in my eyes, but not before I’d tried passive bi-amping of the B&Was with a second P500. Trouble probably was small irregular room and bad speaker positioning.

2002 Linn Kolektor/ LK85. Bought after auditioning various others. Served me well, but never got the resolution and focus I was looking for.

2003 Croft Vitale pre, because of the glowing reviews. Outrageously high gain necessitated attenuating interconnect from Russ Andrews. Didn’t really find a role.

2005 Linn C2100 power - still on the quest for more something. Still didn’t really find it, though it did me well enough. PhD meant money not super-abundant.

2012 Naim NAC112x from Tom Tom. Thinking I’d scratch the itch for a full Naim system, since I had Intro2 speakers (since 2002) and CD5x

2014-ish Onkyo A-9030 integrated. To build a cheap system to get through kids’ toddler phase. (Naim system plan put on ice.) Quite decent for the price.

2023 Naim NAP150x. Finally the all-Naim system! With upgraded Rega P3 and Tisbury Domino phono stage. This is the sound I was looking for 20 years ago. Phew!
