Your Desert Island Disk And Why

If you had to take one album (doubles are ok but no compilations) on to your desert island what would it be and why ?
I’ll start the thread off with mine which is Hemispheres by Rush.
At the time of the albums release 1978 my music tastes were more of the British traditional rock kind Zepp, Purple and Free great bands but this album just changed my musical direction forever.
So Hemispheres is my desert island disk what’s yours ?

Without a moments hesitation, Kind of Blue. A very unique and timeless album.

Is there a TT, CD or file player and rest of kit and a source of electricity? If a wind-up gramophone is the only option then choice may be limited

KOB is my no 2, but closely in front it would have to be

Because it touched many nerves in my life at the time

For the sake of argument let’s assume you are lucky enough to have whatever kit is required to play your chosen choice of music

I do wonder that if by the time you have only one cd/record/tape* that you won’t thoroughly hate it by the time you are rescued.

  • To play on my new Naim cassette deck

Second Thoughts by Split Enz. This was the album that opened my mind to all sorts of genres,it’s got a bit of everything running through it,so imaginative.

In lockdown with a friend we did a Desert island disc each. I think it’s 8 tracks a luxury and a book. Rather fun and I thought I’d like a bear called Paddington as a book ( I don’t read lots!) and my sister in law as my luxury… she’s a very charming Parisian.
Somehow it’s now a 60 hour playlist spotify:playlist:0kuw3073zuKtBwHrqupuOV

When the Beeb asked a similar question a few years ago the result was predictable: Lark Ascending by R Vaughan Williams. I don’t wish to be thought of predictable so for me it will: Finlandia by J Sibelius.

Something with words will take some thought …

What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye. Because it’s timeless, moving, beautiful etc etc.

I think it has to be Mozart and if I’m allowed a complete opera it would be Cosi fan Tutte. The performance conducted by Bohm with Ludwig and Schwarzkopf, please. The perfect opera with a dream cast and a battery-operated Statement system to play it on, if possible.

StationToStation.
Grew up in mid 70’s as a Bowie fan but I was too young for Ziggy & Aladdin Sane tours. Bowie had decamped to USA and all we had were the records. These were played to death.
In 1976 Bowie announced a UK tour. A whole week at Wembley Empire Pool and i as an excited 16 your old got tickets. First gig I ever saw and to be honest I’ve never been the same since.

A choice of 8 is difficult enough, down to one impossible. So from a shortlist of Cenerentola (fun), Bach B Minor Mass (glorious and uplifting), RVW 3rd Symphony (a deeply moving War requiem) and Crime of the Century (memories), I think I’ll plump for the Bach.

But I will have a different shortlist and a different choice in the morning. Or even a different choice from the same shortlist.

Just rememebered I think I chose Mahler 2nd on another thread. And the choices of Cosi fan Tuttte and Kind of Blue above has got me thinking. Oh 'eck.

Solar powered with the option wind up batteries.

That should get the Naim boffins lying in a darkened cell…

Can imagine lying on the beach listening to this !

@PW42 we’re together listening to Mahler 2 with a solar powered system

If I was on my own island probably Magnum On A Storytellers Night image
A much under-rated Birmingham band.
Only one provisio it would have to be streamed so i can skip Just Like an Arrow.

Only one disk on a desert island will be difficult. However, sure I would bring this one: Sarah Vaughan (with Clifford Brown).

David Sylvian, Gone to Earth. Transports me to being 18 again growing up in the New Forest. V nostalgic record and steeped in atmosphere.
