222/250/NPX300 vs Series 300

Every time I glance at this thread’s title, I assume it’s referring to the 202/200 and I’m in my early forties again!

I keep vacillating. My heart is in the 300 series. However the 200 series would work with my existing racks and even allow room for an NPX300 power supply. If I did the 300 series there would be no room for any phono stage or any power supply without changing racks which we really DO NOT want to do.

My dealer is concerned about the decreased in streamer quality from my NDX2/XPS. Some people suggest that streaming will be fine with the 222/250. My husband is really opposed to changing racks. The 222/250 easily works in our environment without issues. Gong to a 332/250 and keeping my NDX2/XPS, as my dealer suggested will not work without changing our racks.

My dealer is also suggesting I stack components which I am extremely reluctant to do and have not done ever.

Osiris, this thread is not finished. Was 222/250, now 332/ 250.
May finish by a question : how good are 500 series ?

My choices are:
222/250/NPX300
322/250/NDX2/XPS plus phono stage
322/333/250 plus phono

Only the first option works with my existing racks and my Rega P9 and its power supply

I can see how hard this is to decide, I can’t recall which thread it was on to quote the post, but whilst the streamer might be a downgrade going 222 vx NDX2/XPS, the amplification is taking a big upgrade from your SN3.

Obviously the safest bet to increase SQ is 300 series, and if the cost isn’t prohibitive, why not. But the phono stage seems to be the sticking point with the racking. Is there really any option other than 222/250?

Would you consider dropping the XPS from option 2 to make room for a phono stage? Gambling on the NDX2 into 332 being an uplift over NDX2/XPS into SN3?

Or can you tolerate a small Rega phono stage tucked somewhere convenient, but not in your existing racking?

Given the size of the change here, what about a TT that doesn’t require a separate PS? I’m massively biased, but the Technics TTs are great, very very easy to use, and don’t have a separate PS.

To present the opposing view, many people here would say that the 222, especially with the 300 PS, is a better streamer than the NDX2/XPS. And even independent of that particular comparison, mixing OC and NC components is widely frowned upon.

I suspect they won’t miss the NDX2/XPS/SN3 with a 222/300/250NC unless they’re more predisposed for the OC sound. If your dealer is working with you and wants you to be happy why not start with the 222/300/250 and if you’re not satisfied try the 300 series.

can’t even see that ?

I’ll say it again, the 222/250 set-up is awesome, add the 300 power supply and it becomes awesome+++++++.

It will do everything you want it to do, its fits your existing HiFi space, it is what you want and meets your needs.

Sure you can get the next step up the Naim ladder but if you’re going to do that why not go one step further or further still. But these step ups cost a lot more than the 222/250/300, they also require you to add in additional equipment that the 222/250/300 incorporates.

For some on the forum the 333/332, associated power supplies, power amplifiers et al is a wonderful system, maybe all that anyone could want. But, we are all different as are our needs, for you it doesn’t work as it doesn’t do what you need it to do.

My question is why are you being persuaded that basing your next set-up on the 332 series is the right way to go when it brings more issues to the table than it solves?

If you’ve decided that the 222/250/300 isn’t for you then I’ll throw in a curve ball, why not look at one of the Linn DSM’s, maybe Selekt level, it can be configured in many different ways, it comes with built in MM/MC phono stages, you can add DAC’s power amps depending on needs/budgets etc, and it wouldn’t need any extra shelving.

Whichever way you decide to go, I hope it works out for you.

I think you may have answered your own question…….

Of course the dealer will recommend options that involve you purchasing an increased quantity of more expensive boxes - in some ways that’s their job.

However, I refer you to @Oxfordian response - the 222/300/250 is a brilliant solution and, unless you have about twice your suggested budget, it will undoubtedly meet your needs, both financially and spatially.

Of course it’s always up to you.

It’s more the lack of spaces and environment issues

@Jaybar feel free to reach out if you’d like to chat, I have demoed or owned all the gear that you are considering here in NYC. Richard can facilitate exchanging emails.

This would be my move too.

That kind of settles it then, doesn’t it?

Actually, knowing HiFi enthusiasts, probably not .

Good with whatever you choose to do .

That must be pure speculation - where have you obtained this ‘information’?

If this was actually the case, why do naim produce so many cables to facilitate the connection of OC to NC ?

Before I bought my NAP350s, I used a NAC332 with an OC NAP250, and it sounded great.
