222 or 300 defective?

Hi all!

Yesterday I bought a 300 and connected it to the 222.

At first I would have wondered why the NPX does not turn on the 222.

The “Naim” light on the 222 does not light up, only the display is activated. Neither the app nor the remote control works, and the volume control doesn’t get its white light either.

It works again immediately as soon as the 222 is operated alone again, so with the two plugs and its own power supply.

Has anyone had an idea or similar experience?

Cheers
Ron

  • Is the burndy locking ring fully tightened?
  • Can you share a clear photo of the back showing both the connections on the 300 and 222?

For nearly all Naim kit behaving weird with an external power supply it is either a loose connection or a missed secondary connection (for units that require it) or a blanking plug in the wrong place.

And to add, have you removed the power lead from the 222?

Have you connected both Burndy leads correctly? If you have, and disconnected the mains from the 222, it’s likely that your 300 or its burndies are faulty. If it’s new, your dealer is your first port of call.

Thank you very much for your hints. Everything is connected correctly. But it doesn’t work…

I will contact the dealer.

Still worth posting a picture, just in case.

This doesn’t suggest that it’s connected properly….

Everything is connected correctly.

Lights are possible to set to LOW but not OFF so seems like something is wrong then.

Not sure if it’s possible to mix up burndys but you are sure you use the right ones?

Tried this?

All NC kit has a logo light brightness reset button on the back, so it should just be a question of using that to get it to come on.

I see that you have your NPX300 Power supply on the top of your rack, perhaps without it, that was the empty shelf? Nevertheless, putting the PS above the preamp in the 222 may not be a good idea. Can I suggest, even though it’s a big job, that you rebuild the system in the usual configuration with preamp at the top? It may just help your connection issue, but if it doesn’t then get your dealer to provide help in the form of new cables, or a new unit.

Here are photos of the two cables.

PS: After I connected the 222 solo again, I noticed that a noise is now coming from the speakers and a quiet “tacking” can be heard in the left channel even though the volume is 0.

Have you made the reset?

The burndys on New classic can be very tight sometimes. You shall hear/feel a distinct click when it’s all the way in.

The 222 doesn’t have a button. I’ve already done that via software.

Apologies, you are correct - I assumed that like my NAC332 preamp, it would, for use whether it was connected to a separate power supply or not.

NPX300 might require a firmware update, unfortunately not available OTA, so return to dealer if not Naim themselves….

PS Naim replaced the Burndies supplied with my NPX300, originals simply too tight to fully lock.

If problems with too tight Burndys I recommend this one and to remove the rubber strap, wrap it around the metal part on the Burndy and gently turn by hand (not using the handle). It makes it sooo much easier.

Although having to use additional force on £6k products does seem somewhat excessive, verging on the unacceptable……

Much better to get Naim to replace them with a set that just works correctly - ie using finger force only.

My system now works again as before, so the 222 with 250.

I don’t know if I’ve never noticed it before, but when I turn on the 250, I don’t hear any noise from the speakers, etc. When the 222 is added, it’s just turned on, no matter which input, I always have a background noise in the speakers.

I’m not sure if this was already the case before connecting the 300 and I just didn’t notice it… Maybe one of you will try it out to see if it’s the case.

thx in advance

No sounds from my speakers - 222/300/250.

Back to the dealership asap methinks.
