I used 2x power supplies on my NDS as well as my ND555. On both streamers there was a substantial increase in separation, definition and bass speed. It is a worthwhile investment.
Regarding Hi-Fi Critic review, I tried the passive Townshend Allergi+ in my system and I can’t understand why they like it so much? The 552 is better, period.
Interesting, I use my ND555 with one 555DR. Before that I used the power supply with a CDS3 i.e. only with one burndy. The first 5-6 weeks it sounded quite poor, more so than I would expect from only the player running in, so I assume the unused second power outlet also played a part here.
Anyone, how auditioned/bought a second new PS noticed any such “run in” issues?
Also, anyone how tried mixing DR with a none DR power supply?
I agree with Colloms that there is a considerable settling in period associated with the addition of a (new) second PS555DR, but for me I feel that Gazza summed it up rather well when he said that the second power supply:
I found it particularly noticeable in the replay of piano and double bass. I listen to quite a lot of jazz and welcome the sense of space that the “triple stack” brings to the sound.
@Gazza, I’m a bit out of date so apologies if you have already covered this. Have you gone for the second PS555 and if so what mix of non-DR and DR you have, and finally what improvements has the second 555PS brought?
Nigel, i tried as mentioned at the end of a SL demo, to remind myself of the benefits of a second 555ps. My 555ps is an ex demo dr one, so would buy another dr one in due course. I liked the SL full loom at Signals, but when i listen at home the benefits are just not apparent. The window behind is 16 feet long and has heavy curtains of an evening…I think this dampens some of the SL improvement. So both Andy and Alistair persuaded me to try the new Kudos KS-1 speaker cable…it performed extremely well giving the naca5 sound with extra detail, more forward in mid and high range…i have bought a set.
So at Signals the second ps gives you get a sense of extra detail, note perfection and just a wonderful naturalness to the music. Definitely need a home demo for a second ps supply. Well our holiday to Costa Rica over easter was cancelled so i may just try a second ps when this nasty virus is brought under control, and i get my refund. Hope things workout for you at your pub, best wishes.
Gazza
Hi all I am leaning towards getting a second supply for the ND555 … but I decided to try Russ Andrew’s Powerchord Evo500’s and they made such a terrific improvement I have kept them. Now the comments made here about the second supplylies effect…interestingly resonates with the findings I had with the Powerchords … Of course I am still wondering what the compound effect might be…there is only one way to find out…
I don’t use my Powerline - I found it disappointingly low on textural detail. The Custom HiFi Powerblack is much better in my opinion (and much cheaper). I haven’t tried the new Russ cable, mainly because I like what the CHC powerblock does (like a grown-up Hydra or Powerigel).
Hi I used 2 x Powerlines and 1 custom…I built…the Evo 500’s replaced this…I was originally going to buy another supply but decided to try the new cords…as I could return them. They were so good I have kept them!! More of everything really detail, speed, power, great PRAT … Another advantage for me is that the Velodyne sub now uses the powerline…this tightened and speeded up the bass … the std Velodyne lead was very uninspiring…
Greatest improvement in my system was the addition of the Audience power conditioner with the Au24 SX power chord my system is 500dr with 552dr Nd555 w/ 2 PS555s, Linn turntable with several upgrades, and super lumina all around . I do think my speakers are the best element being Wilson Alexias 2 . I love the sound it’s suits me to a t. Every time I’ll listen it occurs to me how lucky I am. Thank you Naiim
French…you were asking me about powerblock (matrix 2)…I did get it today and its really sound better ..bass is deeper and much more dynamics ...didnt get attention or care about it before
