3.12 Firmware

Hi, thanks for the message. Let the Knife Do the Talking by Hypocrisy, Seven Headed Whore by Iced Earth and Meet Your Maker by In Flames are pretty nice metal test tracks.

I had the streamer without power for a day, situation seems to be much better now. The issue might have has something to do with naim/qobuz integration, as my own playlists had also disappeared from Naim app, but now they are back.

Thanks everybody for your help :slightly_smiling_face::+1:

I had a listen to those.

They all present with tremendous speed! Excellent.

It does run-in. I find there are ongoing changes and jump improvements in performance every few days. I noticed after nearly a week it was opened-out better, but for me on day 18 of this FW I found late last night and confirmed today it had taken another big improvement step.

A much more solid immersive sound and smoother today - very nice.

I had tried to muse over what is happening, as it reminds me of the sort of thing that happens with cable run-in I have experience in past. This seems to upset some people to an extreme that can put me off mentioning it - but I think the mute person feature sorts out the bigots.

For me this FW is still improving - for whatever reason as I’ve just installed (no hard re-boot/reset) and just left my system running 24-7 some 18 days since installed.

The previous Beta before this version we had to run for a lot longer and I also found it improved in the same way and by month 2 run-in I was really getting into its sound. Then we had this Release version to test, which was released to all which reset the clock on the run-in it seems.

Whatever people prefer to belive, I think we should be able to report what we hear.

DB.

Capacitors adapts to a current, voltage change and frequency. Full stop.

Just like you i can also have a opinion, and that opinion is different to you, as i can’t see how firmware can change, you download it and it just runs or it doesn’t.
If you download firmware on your lap top it doesn’t burn in, etc. Same for my car, thank god, as i would hate that to take weeks to finally burn in, whilst i am doing 70 mph down the road.
Something else might be changing, but firmware it certainly isn’t.

Have you tried to replicate Darkebear’s auditory experience with the 3.12 firmware update and failed to replicate it?

Just because you don’t understand how changes could occur doesn’t mean that they cannot. It’s like those people who insist that ethernet cables cannot make a difference. You don’t have equipment with 3.12 on it, so it’s not sensible to assert that changes cannot possibly occur. You just don’t know.

Firmware can’t change or things will go wrong and not work, its just a programme like any other firmware is. Be it for the tv, your phone, pc, car, etc, etc.
If it changes then we would be in real crap as things would just not work.
Something else might be but its certainly not the code you download the other day.

@soueric I just mentioned what @Darkebear previously said. I’m no expert on this precise topic but thought it might have been interesting for some forum members. That was my simple and very relaxed intention, full stop. Anybody can believe what they want.

Of course the firmware itself cannot change, but there remains the possibility that changes made in the new firmware can lead to changes in the way physical components work, leading to SQ changes over time. I have no idea, but I know it’s foolish to state categorically that something like this can’t happen. You just don’t know for sure.

Dunc, have you tried 3.12? what do you think?

Well thats what i have been saying, firmware can’t change.

I haven’t heard it as yet

something has changed. ears will tell.

It troubles me that everyone states that the sounds of 3.12 has changed (seemingly for the better this time…) but Naim have not made any statement related to sound changes/improvments.

Were Naim expecting there to be any sound changes?
If so, why not disclose this in change/release notes?
If not, then it appears that users are detecting unexpected sound changes which isn’t a good thing as it would imply that Naim don’t have complete control of over how functional changes to code (such as changes to ciphers when communcating with 3rd parties) impact on the playback code.

Or would Naim state that that would not expect users to defect any sound changes in 3.12?

I think we’re on thin ice when the sound of an expensive hifi component is arbitrarily altered by the manufacturer from how it sounded when originally purchased. Yes, it’s lovely when then general concensus is that we appear to get a free SQ boost but it hasn’t always been the case as we know from last year…What if someone finds the sound of 3.12 to be worse that 3.11?

That’s something worth thinking about. A valid point

Kind of strange that I report about what I heard and that I am seen by some of you like a weirdo. A difference between the initial sound of 3.12 and the sound I hear now after a couple of days. I can’t explain the phenomenon, but it’s true to my ears. It could be real because of some kind of to me unknown reason or it could be just my physiological constitution on the different days.

Apparently when I look at how I describe what I hear I see similarities to what others describe as well, even in my critical notes I see some things coming back in other reports.

Assuming I go to Vienna - the ones finding my observations odd, can avoid reading my show report….

It has just occured to me (forgive me, I’m a bit slow) that even those of us who are using our streamers to feed an nDac report hearing an improvement in sound. Does this imply that said improvements are due solely to changes on the streaming side and have nothing to do with changes to the dacs in those streamers (if any). Have users with other external dacs heard similar improvements in sound quality?

The firmware could easily change the sound as all dac’s use code to shape the sound. Filters etc. Try to lower the noise floor, etc. But the code itself won’t change or adapt over time, just a different code will do that.

Not sure about the capacitors changing as the capacitor used should be very good at not doing the memory thing, plus if it does do it then the capacitor used isn’t really up to the job its been used in, plus i think it would make it sound worse not better if it was happening
