Yes I was thinking that while listening to Overkill by Mötorhead today during a relaxing lunch break of home office. The new remastered version that is🤣
So far I haven’t yet come accross an album which is edgy…, this was different when hearing some specific albums on the non DR version.
Sounds like a good case for the DR amps then
You guys are so cruel
I can see @Stu299 pacing up and down and across his listening space muttering OMG I must absolutely have a 500 DR amp😉
Just listen to the hedgehog @Stu299 and all will be well
hedgehog?
I found the same when testing SL cables … the most critical was the std din to xlr v sl din to xlr… the std cable was more musical… just sounded more dynamic and fun… The run in SL din to xlr in comparison sounded flatter in my system less dynamic…just meh… The Morgana brought back the fun plus more … happy days.
500dr is superior to std 500 … but the most critical thing is amp speaker matching…get the right synergy and either of them are great…its just that the dr will always be that bit greater… don’t loose sleep over it just enjoy the music!!!
Also borrowed Sarum T but returned it and kept my Lavender and my much cheaper Vertere DIN-DIN
Same experience here. It is all about voicing and balance. Run my DBLs with nonDR 500 kit, Naca5, Lavender, HiLine and Vertere interconnects
Interesting! Which Vertere is it and how does it compare to Lavender?
I use HiLine for Nat 01 and Superline, I use Lavender for Prefix/Hicap and use Vertere for my digital sources. The Vertere are rather old (first generation?) Pulse R and Pulse B bought preloved for something like 800 Euro in total. Funny enough, HiLine work better for Nat 01 than the Vertere and Vertere work better for the digital sources than the HiLine.
I also tried Superlumina which was rather good (and much better than the Chord in my mind) but it did not add anything meaningful in the foot tapping department over the Vertere.
This type of album is made to show off the qualities of the 500DR. Brutal dynamics and very nice silent details, enjoying it a lot….
Harding:
Much better weather and food than you can get in Sweden — well done Harding!
I also prefer the 500 non DR.
I did the comparison and while the 500DR brings more details, and “laser” precise mids, it has less bloom in the bottom end, the bass is more controlled but has less volume and it feels more like a “regular” amp (from other companies) rather than a naim beast.
You touch some aspects of difference, while I wouldn’t say the volume of bass is less, it’s just better controlled and misses the bloom effect as you prescribe. The bloom does have a kind of attraction, but I still prefer the much more natural and precise bass of the DR version. Bottom line I wouldn’t consider giving it back anymore even if it would be financially attractive….
The 500DR shows its superiority especially while listening to dynamic classical symphonic music. An example of that is the current listening experience of Shostakovich 8th symphony in the new recording of the Berliner Philharmoniker with Petrenko. Never edgy, all details are there when needed, natural tonality…… playing it loud of course….
Not wanting to be overly pedantic- but you probably ment the 9th symphony. It has very fast outer movements and the version by Petrenko is insanely fast and played very precisely. Poor piccolo flutes… Just the kind of material that the 500DR excels at.
Best, Jorg
I know why you mention the 9th, but actually when I made the comments it was really about the 8th, but there are of course better pieces to show of what the DR is capable off.
Sorry for making a wrong assumption. There are many great Shostakovich symphonies.
