Tim my speakers are on a mini scale but I had a similar issue…just as you describe…be careful when I upgraded to 500dr I had to pull them out further…it was good but a pain as I don’t have much room…
Sorry Nigel, I completely missed your post and needless to say utterly unintentionally.
On a positive a slight consensus seems to be building, problem is nobody really listens here ATB Peter
I have my 808s 13" from the back wall with a 1 cm toe-in, which I appreciate might be too far forward for you. I couldn’t go closer to the wall because in my room the bass would be overpowering, but as we know all rooms are different. I use a full Super Lumina 500 rig with 9 metre runs of speaker cable and Super Lumina jumper cables to connect the top to bottom box. Both my main sources of ND555/Melco N1 with 2 555PS and LP12/Radikal sound superb. I connect the incoming cable from the 500 to the top speaker cabinet and then link down to the bottom one. Some people prefer the other way round, so it is something to experiment with.
Thanks, Michael. If the fraim does move then they could come out a few inches - 4 inches quite easily, maybe six without poking out too much in front of the fraim. So we might have a bit of flexibility there.
Sounds like the 500 might bring too much bass that would then need taming
I wouldn’t worry about “too much bass”.
A NAP 500DR will have a firm and accurate grip on your 808s and therefore allow them to do what they were design to do : produce deep, really deep bass (they go down to 20 Hz !!! ).
The NAP300DR probably won’t have such a nice grip on the 808… grip means articulated and detailed bass. Which is, I believe, what you’re seeking.
But you’ll have it all, from 20-30Hz up to 70Hz. Which means the inevitable room modes.
I’m pretty sure that a clever positioning will help.
With a system like yours, everything lies in the details.
Out of interest which cab did your dealer connect to the main speaker lead top or bottom?
Thank you for the clarification, Thomas
I play the bass, and hearing bass guitars so clearly for the first time ever is really rather excellent. Managed to play at some volume for half an hour this evening while the teenager was out with the dog and there is no sign of shoutiness. I think there may be a Bit of boom at one frequency…
Bottom
Spot on Thomas. I am a great fan of classical organ music and those deep pedal notes on a quiet 32 foot stop are most convincing on the 808s. At the other end of the bass spectrum the sound on some fast and furious slap bass is equally impressive, totally in control and the pitch of the notes right down to the lowest spot on.
I would definitely swap to the top box and see which you prefer, a quick and easy job to swap over and go back if you prefer the bottom connection.
Tim, out of interest which speaker cables are you using for the demo?
FWIW, Dave gave me the same tip when I ran a thread about rebuilding my Fraim stacks a few months back. In my case, and to my ears, he was right about 552 on the top shelf. Also with a medium height shelf between it and the ND555 below in my case.
I agree with Dave and KJC re having the 552 top shelf.
+1. I have the luxury of three Fraim stacks so on the top I have ND555 left 552 centre and LP12 right.
Nope, the problem doesn’t lie within the 500 amp, in fact purely as Thomas said
Ah I didn’t answer your comment on super lumina did I? Using my naca5 at the moment. Pete left some superlumina for me to try
Pete installed the nd555 on top. Same at local friend’s house with same approach by Geoff. So nd555 on top is an acoustica thing? (edited to add the question mark as lots of acoustica customers had a different set up )
Spanner in the works from wife alert. No additional wires are to come across the front of the fireplace… so no move in the stacks
Maybe so, maybe not, Tim, as Pete simply slotted the ND555 into the space vacated by my NDS, and the tall Fraim units came later, to get the 552 elevated.
As an aside, the 500 power supply is between the twin 555PS’s, as it makes it easier to keep those Burndies off the floor.
