500 v 2x300 active?

Have agreed with Pete that we are going to be putting the melco (n1z and ripper) and switch on fraim (minimising Ethernet runs between the n1z and the nd555), so I think we will have five levels on the left stack two of which will be medium height, the rest standard, and six standard on the right, marching height- one medium needed for 500 and the other will make space around the nd555 / 552?

Should look very neat - will all be full fat fraim as the dark cherry fraimlite (all with glass and balls) is being traded in against used light cherry full fat

On the basis that going active (on the 808s) even with 3x250s would add three shelves (and 3x300s would add six!), it should be clear why I will never be going active. A single 500 is the limit

Just seen you are quite local to me…

Eee laddie… Edgworth lad

Preston ish here

I just fell over this comment I made after bunging the EE switch in. I think it’s worth reflecting that the 808s with a single 300dr are a significant uplift on active SL2s with 2x300dr. The 808s are still sounding very yummy but I am not looking forward to starting from scratch again - even though there will be a 500dr to try out at the same time.

Unsurprisingly the electrician who was “able to come early [this] week” hasn’t showed up… and Helen is already looking darkly at me for filling the Christmas tree space with the SL2s :grimacing: and I don’t have a proper ETA for my 808s (waiting for a drive unit to arrive, presumably from Norway)

Believe me it will be worth the wait!!! The 500 is effortless…and those speakers will sing…with the 500 if you turn it up the soundstage does not collapse its just so expansive…you are in for a treat…
Having said that the Nap300 is pretty darn good…but I still think you will see a noticeable jump. The psu is huge…and the earth line from the speaker is referenced differently…

Any news Tim? ATB Peter

Nope. Not got a date yet… am going to be in trouble with the Christmas tree erector of the household as SL2s taking up valuable tree erection space

Now got a date - just before Christmas. Not quite sure how I keep the females of the house happy with tree space. Or lack of :grimacing:

Also, apparently the electrician went to Devon instead of coming here (Preston) but can come next week. Hmm. We shall see. Even if he can’t come there are available sockets so improvement when he does come, whenever that is

Currently working too hard to listen to anything much (getting rather fed up of stupid deadlines that keep popping up) but when I do it is sounding really rather lovely - the 808s seem still to be improving - so looking forward to seeing what the 500 brings. Albeit with a new and tight pair of 808s to start with - time will bring them round of course

Managing to work in front of the system today. Antonio Forcione in concert sounding fabulous and the boom I had seems to have gone, so the 808s are still improving.

Will be starting from scratch with the new ones but I daresay I will get some listening in over Christmas to get hours under the new 808s, and try the 500

And we have even managed to find space for the tree before the racks are moved. Phew!

By the way, the 808s are continuing to sound very good. The inevitable drop to come from a brand new pair is not something to look forward to, but reaching the far side of that (of course the drop will be temporary until I have my own pair run in)

I have had a really hideously busy few weeks with work (not complaining too much - they will go quite a long way to paying for the upgrades ) and a bit run down and stressed as a result, but the system is sounding so good and is lifting me back up, so that it’s more bearable

I may have to look into headphones given my wife dislikes my music so much, but if I can manage moderate volume the 808s still do a lovely bit o bass to keep the sound balanced. No need for a loudness button here

That does seem to be a serious benefit of using Titans, they don’t require too much volume to sound balanced. For me that is especially important as i live in a terraced house and i like also listening to music until the late hours without disturbing my lady who goes to bed long before i do.

As a favour to you I will take them off your hands, I will even drive up tomorrow to show willing …and, I will only charge you for 50% of the petrol.

Sorry but no - they are part funding the 808s though I was a bit tempted to keep them as the fronts in the cinema room (currently an n system) they are even the right finish

I would, like a shot!

…but then you have spent a sheckle or two recently!

Tim,

In all seriousness if it isn’t stretching things too much then I am using SBLs with a Naim Axess. Initially they didn’t quiet match as I power the centre with a Nord one-up, with the 300DR on the SBLs. Since tuning in Dirac on the Lexicon the front is seemless.

…at the least I would be tempted to give it a go.
