Looking forward to seeing it in daylight
Eh, what’s going on Tim? Something you need to tell us!!
Congratulations and how exciting. Thank you for sharing your journey, great read. Christmas Eve come early!!!
If you haven’t worked it out after 682 posts, Dusty
That’s what I was hinting at
One of these is end result (not the best pic but after another half a dozen trips to the loft to pack the boxes away I need to sit down) - the other was part way through
At the moment the 500 has only been on for less than an hour and the speakers need some hours on them so sounding a bit brittle and sharp. But I know from the first set of 808s (the dem pair) that they will come good in a couple of weeks and keep improving. So the start of a journey again!
If it all sounds as good as it looks Tim you will be one very happy bunny indeed.
A lovely room indeed.
And no more listening tonight as Helen has just got home and announced that (1) she preferred the racks where they were before and (2) she’s off to work at 530 in the morning (so in 7.5 hours) as she has an enormous amount of work to do (tomorrow is supposed to be her last day before Christmas). Mind you, having only managed half an hour of work today, I have rather a lot to do myself before Thursday evening
great looking system can you tell us the distance from the back of the 808’s to the wall?
I need a wall hugger if ever I replace dbl’s and they look pretty close to the wall.
Congrats!
9 or 10 inches so 22-25cm. Pete of Acoustica thinks that is far enough out; but says that Derek of Kudos reckons further away is better.
And I know the Polarbear’s are a metre or so from the wall, though that is partly because if not that far out they are rather in the corners of the room
Hi Mario. Measured accurately this morning with a tape measure - didn’t want to do it last night with Helen watching me
So the speakers are 9 inches / 23 cm from the back wall - that’s about 4cm more than the intermediate position and 13cm more than original 10cm from wall - which was too close but Pete was nervous of Helen’s views!
The sounds is hugely improved this morning already (it was already fantastic PRaT-wise, but sounded a bit brittle) - and I know that the speakers will improve a lot over the coming weeks. And I am told the 500 will also
Very, very happy this morning
Hi there Tim, thanks for the detailed response. I have a unique problem of an acoustically transparent projector screen that drops right in front of my dbls. There is only about 50 cms between it and the wall so probably not enough room for 808s. I would only have about 17cms if I was ever to get them. DBLs of course are right up against the wall so plenty of room. Any way, still very content with my speakers, but am always thinking of new adventures in hifi. You luckily are right in the middle of a no doubt wonderful one - enjoy.
Thanks Mario - I remember now about your screen. Yes, the distance from the wall to the front of the 808s is about 63cm (Pete was measuring it yesterday). That’s a shame - good luck with your search
what an early Christmas pressie @TimOopNorth keep the reports coming in
I am hoping to move to Kudos T505 in the new year - will post of course
Congrats on the 505s - I had a very happy hour or two listening to 505s at the acoustica show in April 2018, I think it was. Just the nicest room there - very musical and I could have listened a lot longer. Which is what I always come away from listening to Titans thinking
Thank you - an early Christmas pressie indeed! Still enjoying them very much - working in front of them though that won’t be possible from tomorrow for a while as Helen will be off work then (hopefully - not a relaxing time to be a GP!)
There’s a whole bunch of changes been made in the system since yesterday morning - the racks have moved to a better location (acoustically speaking), they are both completely full fat fraim now (the brawn rack was lite), there is a 500dr (new) instead of 300dr (couple of years ago upgraded to dr), the 808s are new and very low hours, the melco n1z is now in place (lots of ripping to do). So a mix of improvements and temporary steps back but overall I am surprised that it is already better than yesterday morning given that I know the 808s with 200-300 hours on them were much better sounding than with 8 hours at the factory
Interesting thread Tim. I think the same 808s are coming to me later this week for a home trial over Christmas - currently have SL2s on the end of 552 and 500 so similar position to you.
Looking forward to hearing them and hope they don’t look too big, which might not go down too well!
Ah well I have run them in for you so will probably sound better there than my new ones are doing at the moment.
I still think they are quite big, even though you definitely do get used to them - they certainly don’t seem as big now as they started off. If it were possible to have the same sound form smaller I would prefer it - but the sound is really great
Just spotted I didn’t reply to this - Pete wasn’t aware of the mk4. He has only just taken on Musicworks (Geoff didn’t like them foe some reason) so it’s early days yet. He said he would ask the rep - I told him it made sense to try the mk4 when available
The 500 takes a while to settle…it has a huge collection of big capacitors that need to burn in and settle. Like 3 or 4 weeks! and it will keep on getting better and better…
He told me a plastic food storage box shoved under a basic mains block was the way to go!
I had one here until Pete removed it…
