Absurd amount of bass following solder termination

Interesting that I didn’t hear any differences in cables, naca5 with 3.2 meters and my linn k20 with 6.5 meters each, or dynavox cables…

The A7s go down to 30Hz in-room. There’s no shortage of bass, the driver is ‘long-throw’ so is quite capable of moving enough air in a typical living room.

Yes and it’s not ‘loose’ either as described by someone above.

I would’t dwell on it. You can easily revisit cable and their terminations again in the future if you change amp or speakers.

Yeah, it’s definitely the room though. Apart from a Hicap Dr, the next hifi money gets spend on acoustic treatment.

I guess it depends what you mean by enough. After moving to Subwoofer arrangements, EQ and properly integrating in room. There’s no way I could go back to a small cone for low bass even supported by a tuned port/transmission line.

Be worth seeing what the in room response is and particular the RT60’s and waterfall graphs to see if it’s more of a room mode being exacerbated by a speaker that is now responding better with a better connection

Sorry, I didn’t mean to cause any hurt here, just my own feelings whenever I heard them on Naim kit. But that’s just me (and I like Naim speakers, which are often considered overly dry and “tight” in the low end), so if you enjoy then that’s all that matters. My own feelings here about the speakers weren’t necessary.

The point I was trying to make was that the improved connection may just have allowed more energy from the bass driver. As such, you could probably ameliorate the situation through re-siting the speakers.

Cables can change the sound so much that you need to revisit placement of the speakers. Try pulling them out 3cm at a time and see what happens.

‘enough’ as in where I didn’t feel any bass was missing where there was bass on the track and it didn’t mask any upper frequencies either.

Of course anything below 30Hz was obviously missing.

I had to adjust the position of my A7s after adding an XPS to my nDAC.

I agree with the rationalisation that:
Soldered = better connection → in this case more bass → set off a room resonance.
Which would imply that your best solution might be resolder and reposition. There are also other ways to either mitigate or remove room resonances.

How far from the front wall are the speakers? You might gain sq by using the soldered cable and moving the speakers out from the wall and most importantly corners. I had Spendor D9 and they sounded best front baffle aprox. 180 cm from the wall and centre of cones 110 cm from side walls. Easy enough to try if there is enough space in the room. The distance was calculated with Cardas principle for placing of speakers so it is in relation to my room dimensions. Good luck with your Spendors. They make some very good speakers.

With low frequency room resonance and peaks in low frequency outputs - room Nodes. You can see what they are likely to be using REW and just inputting the data (no mic needed to see) into the room sim, it will allow you to see what might happen if you move the speakers around. In reality moving small amounts won’t show much differences in the sim and measurements but I am often surprised how sometime the interaction and harmonics in a room can change your perception.

One thing that makes a big difference is the low frequency decay and this is difficult to reduce. Sometimes adding wadding under a sofa and some furnishings can help. Wall panels will make only modest differences below 100 Hz and usually over dampen if used too much.

If you can measure using REW (free software and a mic needed) it will show you what you are dealing with

Thanks! Playing around with REW Room sim now :+1:

But it doesn’t take into account where you are seated?

@emsfurmogin hi and welcome,

In my experience choice of speaker cable is very dependent on speakers whereas with interconnects Naim wire to my ears always works best with Naim electronics. To this end with my Kudos speakers and Dynaudios before I’ve always used Chord Odyssey, 20 years now, tried Naca with the Kudos but lumpy in the bass to my ears, I wonder if similar to what you’re hearing? But it’s subjective of course.

However, I should demo Kudos KS1 (@Cymbiosis you’ve been warned!). But golden rule of hifi, if it’s working leave well alone!

Regards,

Lindsay

If they are anything like Naca 5 they have a lift in the upper bass or mid bass as far as I have heard but lack deep bass extension.

Maybe someone who has changed from naca4 to 5 can chime in and tell us what the expected differences are

True. In my room this way was the best to get the best results though. When installing my system I first started by putting one speaker in a corner and then walked around to find a spot where the sound was most evenhanded. Then after a few month of trying different positions by ear tried the Cardas and with a few adjustments I think it’s the best compromise and the listening position is in the middle of the room as that’s where I found it when walking around. It shouldn’t be but it is. I listen near field since it’s so much better than long distance. You get more insight is my take. Not everyone that has been here agrees and wants to move the listening position about 30 cm back. It’s fine but it looses that nerve I’m after.
