Adding the Ruark CD player to an Atom

Greetings to all!

New to this forum & my first post is a question or two to you all (sorry)…

Looking at the Atom & would like to connect a CD player as still have music that isn’t all available via streaming. I’d like a CD player I could get out & put away again after use; would also need to be easy to set up & play for my partner. So I’ve been thinking about the Ruark R-CD100 that just uses a single USB lead to connect to their R610 unit…would that CD player work in the same way connected to the Atom? I believe the Atom will connect to a portable hard drive through a USB socket so why wouldn’t the Ruark CD player work the same way? Or am I over simplifying things?

Anyone done this?

Thanks in advance for any replies…much appreciated.

The player is designed to work with specific Ruark units and needs that unit for control. You need to be looking at a standard CD player or transport. I’ve read positive comments about a Cyrus player on here.

Have you thought of ripping your CDs and putting the files on a USB drive. You can then attach the drive to the back of the Atom and have them available through the Naim app. It’s a cheaper and more elegant option.

I would just add that of you want a CD player with a digital output (which makes sense) it needs to be SPDIF, not USB. That will connect to a digital input on the Atom, either optical or coax.

The mission 778 cdt is nice half width cd player, nice price at £449.

Hi @SEM and welcome to the forum.

You really have two options. You could rip your CDs as @HungryHalibut mentions above. Alternatively you could use a CD transport. The Mission 778 has good reviews and would pair nicely with an Atom. Forum members have also used the slightly cheaper Audiolab 6000CDT withe success. But neither is really designed to be stored away after use. If you really want a one-box system, ripping is probably the only way to go.

Many thanks for the replies & suggestions. Much appreciated.

I’m a bit stuck with a small living room with the Hi-Fi sat on a sideboard with other bits & pieces hence looking for a CD player I could get out/put away. Ripping to a hard drive or USB stick is a good idea…..if I had the time! :hourglass_not_done:

should be demoing an Atom on Saturday….excited!

SMSL and Shanling do offer some nice CD transports, Usually I’d hesitate to buy much Chinese hi-fi, but one of these are tempting for my next purchase.

An off the wall suggestion, look at the fiio dm13 portable cd player from the river site. It’s rechargeable, so you don’t have a power cord to worry about, it has a digital output for the atom, and will be small to put away when not needed It’s not going to have the audio or build quality of a proper player or transport, but it satisfies your other criteria

That saved my day ! - Thanks.

I’ve tried to order one, but only Bluetooth edition comes up, maybe I missed something or there’s several editions ?

The description says “with Bluetooth”, but if you read through the detailed description, you’ll see mention of the digital output

My fault, thanks

Thanks to RobBa for the Fiio suggestion. :+1:

Looking at it, it seems to be ideal for my partner to set up & use…..& the fact that we don’t play Cd’s that much to warrant a big outlay.

ok….I now see a problem with the Fiio. The RCA socket on the back. It’s a female entry & a good quality RCA lead won’t fit straight in by the look of it. The Fiio seems to come with a short adaptor lead but that seems counter productive to fit to a good quality RCA lead. Doh!
