Listened to this yesterday.
Very interesting, and incredibly moving when talking about Rik Mayall.
Available on BBC radio catch up.

I read some of the transcript……bitter sweet memories.
I heard it too. What a nice man, not always trying to be funny and ‘on it’. His emotions over Rik Mayall choked me up too!
Bruce
It was a lovely episode and I agree he came across as a lovely caring person.
I listened to it again and on the extended version he even mentions Gong’s Camembert Electrique!
I recommend the book. It’s an excellent, thought-provoking read and he comes off as a very real human being.
Where did you find the extended version? Cheers.
On BBC Sounds there’s also a 3 part series he did for Radio 3 (of all places) reminiscing about his life.
Thank you. The BBC Sounds podcast version is much longer and well worth a listen.
As you have found the BBC Sounds version is the longer version by default as Laura Laverne mentions when it starts.
The podcast version is over an hour long, the live broadcast version, which I heard first, is about 35 mins and is a much edited version in terms of the dialogue. The podcast version is much more comprehensive, and interesting imho.
Just finished it.
Excellent listening and emotional talking about Rik M.
I’m looking at the BBC Sounds iOS app and can only find the 35 minute version. Same happens when I go via the web site. What am I missing?
This may work. When you click on it says 35 mins. But when you play it says 1hr 8 mins.
Aha. Thank you. It’s clearly a BBC error as when I’ve gone back and clicked on the 35 minute podcast it is indeed just over an hour. Shall AirPlay that over my system tomorrow morning after breakfast.
Listening to his descriptions of his childhood family experiences. I’m reminded of my favourite Philip Larkin poem and how luminously truthfull it is.
Yes he’s a 65+ year old clearly still profoundly impacted by what happened to him at 12.
Really moving listen.
Will check that out. Saw him a couple of times about 10 years ago in a band called the Bad Shepherds. Great fun but only a short lived project. Albums on Qobuz though
Wonderfully open, honest and insightful interview with such an admired talent - thank you for bringing it to my attention. Very touching insight into Rick and Ade’s final (sadly failed) efforts to write something together. I wish Ade can satisfy his career aspirations and come to terms with himself before too long. It is clear his family mean the world to him.
I believe he is now an official member of the Bonzo Dog Doo Daa band now. Not sure if they still record or if it’s just touring.
