Airplay for first gen uniti

I’d like to use the new feature of the Naim app that lets me play internet radio on my iPhone, and then stream that radio via airplay to a first-generation Uniti. What kind of airplay receiver could I connect to the Uniti?

I’ve found the Pure Jongo A2 units to be easy to use, generally reliable in connection, and even sound not too bad through their analogue outs (there’s coaxial and optical s/pdif too). Best of all they are usually very cheap to buy from places such as eBay and the like. I think the last one I bought was under £20.

Sorry Richard, I’ve edited my original post. I’m looking for an AirPlay receiver not a bluetooth receiver

Ah OK, well that’s even easier - just get an old Apple airport express (A1264 or later). Just connect to the Uniti’s optical s/pdif via a Toslink cable

Wouldn’t it be easier just to play the stations on the Uniti directly? The new feature is really for when one is away from home.

Yes it would but the first gen uniti is too olf for ghe new nam iradio

Have you tried connecting an iOS device into a USB port on the Uniti? That’s how they were originally designed to work and were Apple certified, as an alternative to using Airplay.

Hi Chris, If I remember correctly, connecting an Apple device to the Uniti via USB was used to play music stored locally. It was designed for the old iPods. I don’t think that by connecting an iPhone via USB you can stream iRadio or apps like Spotify.

The Works with iPod certified connection that Naim implemented was done when iPods were popular and people used iTunes and bought downloads from Apple, so yes, that was its intended purpose. As other non-Apple apps became available they would normally work too. Sometimes play wouldn’t start on a non- Apple app, in which case playing something from iTunes then going to your chosen app would kick it into action.

It’s been a while since I’ve used a 1st gen streamer but as far as I’m aware this should still work with any iOS device. It doesn’t work with Naim’s 2nd gen streamers, but they have Airplay.

Chris, are you saying that if I connect an iPhone 16 to my Uniti via USB and use the BBC app to listen to a radio station, the sound will come through the Uniti?
I really don’t think so, but I’ll give it a try. Thanks!

Yes, it should work. It certainly used to work with all 1st gen Naim streamers. If you get silence at first remember to try playing something from the Apple Music app first, then switch to the radio player.

If you don’t like having to use cable there are plenty of ways to add Airplay such as an old Apple Airport Express from eBay connected to the Uniti optical input.

Apple Music on my iPhone 11 plays through usb on my nac272, however I usually stream via Sonos port into nac272 dac which is more convenient.
