And the journey starts

I doing think Naim expect you to put a Nova into a 300, don’t worry about that though, i do and it sounds great!
I think Flashback offer a suitable cable for you. Just make sure you specify the devices you are using. Phil

So the 272 is better than ND5XS2? Despite the former being a streamer/pre and the latter being a dedicated streamer??

I think the people that have as much savings as is the value of their house, will find the value in the multiple millions, not 500k.

Otoh, contrary to popular opinion (on this forum) I do think you’ll benefit from more expensive speakers, even if your source is not balanced. There’s often good reasons to spend more on one then the other outside the theoretical ideal, and it’s silly to think there will be no benefit s.

That’s apart from the fact that I believe (again opposite to popular forum opinion) that speakers will actually make the largest audible difference. Although balance is always best.

There’s a very long thread about the 272 here Love the 272 please update - 1 click like post

I’d agree with this, that choosing speakers with the presentation you want, but it has to be in the context of a balanced system.

Anyways, FWIIW, I’d suggest running the 300 of the Nova and then take your time deciding on what streamer and pre-amp combination you want and swap them out in one hit.

…or 572/Supernova in a single unit? Innovation roadmap seems to be favouring combining products with greater skill and know-how to deliver unprecedented levels of SQ and VFM.

I managed to skim through it the best I could. Threads in this forum have the tendency to grow lots and lots of branches and that one was covered with Tidal conversations.

If I am not mistaken the gist of that thread is that the 272 is a superb performer and it would be a good choice coupled with a power supply. An updated 272 would be even better and end game for quite a lot of people.

Which leads me to ask: Instead of buying a 282+SCDR+streamer would I be best buying a 272+external power supply?

…after reading this I took a stab at what my system would like based on list prices of a XPS DR > NDX 2 > HiCap DR > SuperNait 2 > ProAc D30RS

Source - NDX 2 + XPS 2 = 4.6 Units
Pre/Power - SN2 + HiCap DR = 2.7 Units
Speakers - ProAc D30RS = 2.7 Units

Just calculated for the fun of it and the numbers did not fit your calculation but do find my humble system to sound mighty fine. It was a fun exercise…

Your speakers cost about the same as mine, so we have the same ratio and great systems :sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses:

I might not be an expert but that ratio sounds rather flawed. According to that logic, if I spend 2 units on power (£8k on the 300DR) then I have to spend nearly £16000 on a turntable and streamer (4 units) and £4k on speakers (1 unit).

Personally I place more emphasis on the speakers and won’t put them at the bottom of the spending ladder.

On the other hand I am quite particular about speakers. I am not form over functionality but more form and functionality (50:50). I want a pair of speakers that sound good but also look modern and not just another pair of rectangular boxes.

It’s called a system for a reason. Not a bunch of units. And buying speakers by the label, or the color combination. I think you need to find a good and Honest dealer who’ll help you build a great SYSTEM. But good luck :+1:

I’m not sure why you have emphasized the word system but I’m afraid you misunderstood what I said. I did not say that I choose the speakers based on their looks but rather looks and performance equally. What I meant is that if I had a choice between ugly speakers and excellent sound or beautiful speakers and very good/near excellent sound then I would go for the latter combination.

And let’s not forget that what someone calls a system somebody else might see as a bunch of units. For me a system needs to have the right combination between functionality/price/sound/looks. I will never buy a system that sounds excellent but gives me nausea everytime I look at it. Because I dont intend to listen to my music in a dark room.

And lastly, the whole point of me starting threads here and asking questions is so that I can understand the (messy) world of Naim better and so that I can make choices based on that knowledge and my preferences to build a system that I am happy with. There is an old saying which translated roughly goes “ask 1000 people and do what YOU think best”. The translation doesnt do it any justice (especially since it rhymes in the original language) but the rough meaning is build a knowedge by asking others and then make a decision on which option YOU prefer.

An ugly audio system that makes one nauseated? This is way beyond me. I’ll excuse myself.

Please do. And shut the door on way out.

Please…it’s a generalisation, caveated in my post with the fact that the pre and the speakers deserve more attention. I still claim that the principle holds some validity (albeit numbers randomly chosen to make the maths easier) as turn the spend pyramid on its head and you would definitely be in mullet territory…

PS…of course there’s always the “great deal” that comes along that you have to go for (ie NAP300) that skews the whole equation

Phil, thank you very much.

They seem to have this one with a 4 pin ring locking din plug:

And this one with a plain 4 pin din:

Can either be used?

  to be honest I wish I hadn’t. I wish I had just stayed with the Nova and bought some middle of the way speakers. I never realised it would give me such headache and in order to enjoy a 300DR I have to spend another 20k in other equipment. :face_with_thermometer: :face_with_thermometer:
