Any ideas: Nova refusing to connect to any wifi network

I recently moved my Nova to my fiancée’s house, and the setup was seamless, connecting to her home wifi. We then went to my house for 10 days and on our return, the Nova was disconnected from the wifi, and flatly refuses to connect. It sees the network, but when reentering the wifi password it cannot connect. It also refuses to connect to a hotspot I set up on my phone. A factory reset of the unit doesn’t help either.

It’s all fine with a wired connection, but this is less than optimal from a positioning point of view.

Any ideas welcome before I contact my dealer.

Thanks,
David

I think I read somewhere here recently that after a factory reset you have to set it up again in the Naim app to overcome this reluctance to connect to WiFi.

It might help if you reboot your router first.

Thanks; I’ve tried a router reboot, and also my phone’s hotspot as an alternative, so it would seem to be the wifi in the Nova not playing ball…

I was having this or a similar problem with my NDX2. Using the webclient connected instantly. Worth a try. http://[ipaddress]/webclient

How many Wi-Fi Access Points are there in the network, is it just a single Router/Access Point or are there any Wi-Fi mesh extenders?
If it has previously worked and nothing has been changed or modified it won’t do any harm to reboot the Access Point and if it’s a mesh work from the Router/Primary AP first and reboot the extenders ending with the one physically furthest away from the Router/Primary AP. Leave a few minutes between doing each to let them settle and determine channel selection and congestion levels.
In my experience, if it’s anything it’s likely related to either the mesh caching a previous connection and it getting stuck in a loop on the mesh or potentially an issue with WPA, Wi-Fi routers/AP’s support multiple modes now including WPA1/2/3 for example and ability to support multiple Wi-Fi generations covering A/B, G, N, AC and AX. You may need to experiment with the compatibility mode settings to get it to settle properly. The Nova has a Wi-Fi 5 (AC) 2x2 radio from memory, so should be fine with a less strict compatibility setting on your Wi-Fi AP.

Yes setting the Nova up as a new device using the app (with the app connected to the WiFi network you want the Nova to connect to) should overcome this issue which appears to be a quirk of the latest firmware

That did the trick - thanks so much

I’m guessing this would have worked too…

Let’s hope for another firmware update to fix this issue soon.

I could not get that to work for me with the NDX2.

Switched providers yesterday. My Uniti Nova, after tapping the ‘?’ in the app’s ‘my devices’ screen (empty though, save for the gear and the ‘?’ icons…) confirms it is connected to my new network.

However, I can’t get to it to play. The app gets stuck in the ‘looking for your Uniti Atom, Star or Nova - this may take a couple of minutes’-loop when I try to connect it as a new device.

‘Something went wrong’ and then gives me the choice back/try again, neither gets me anywhere.

I switched router, phone and Nova off and back on again several times.

Are you trying this via WiFi…?

As ever, try hooking up a wired Ethernet connection direct to your router (or via a switch if need be), even if it’s just temporary….Once you have the Nova set up and recognised in the App, you may find it’s possible to then sort out the WiFi connection….

Yes I’m trying via WiFi.

Because the device itself confirms it is connected to (and states the correct name/code for) the new router, I would expect to be able to get it to play via WiFi… but I can’t even get to the settings to be able to change details like the pass key (of which I am sure I haven’t entered it because this morning was the first time I switched it on) and such. How was the device even able to connect? And what does ‘connected’ mean, if it gets me nowhere?

The Naim user manual:

So, Naim people, please sort out the way this works and the way the app communicates with users, so they don’t end up in a useless loop like this.

Thank you for the suggestion S.C., I’ll try a cable now, hopefully temporarily.

After connecting the network cable, the Nova has updated its firmware and plays internet radio and Tidal.

Then I switched it off and pulled the mains plug, then restarted it without the network cable. It took a couple of times to log in and reconnect the app to the device, after that I had to log in to Tidal two times, but now it works as it should.

Thanks again SC.

Thanks @PW42, today I learnt something about this webclient! Super convenient from my laptop, as I used to search for my phone and connect to the Naim app to change radio or turn off the device! Really great discovery.
Thanks!

Naim try to discourage use of the webclient as it was never intended for public use, and changing settings on it can have unintended consequences. Use with caution.

Hello - I’ve got a very similar problem but it appears to have happened over the past 24 hours. I noticed that Tidal refused to play in ‘connect’ mode only chromecast. When I restarted Tidal, hey ho, it couldn’t find my Nova. Things went from bad to worse as then I noticed Spotify couldn’t see the Nova either. Switched off/on wifi router, restarted Nova and factory reset and it can see my home wifi but fails to connect. The Naim app doesn’t help any longer as it can’t see the Nova either. The Nova is about 18 months old, usually reliable, and I had the firmware updated about a month ago. My wife is desperate to ditch the Nova as she thinks its a pile of techno junk compared to our old Ruark R4 (she’s completely wrong wrt SQ!) Any quick ideas to rectify appreciated! Many thanks, K.

The Nova is a super piece of kit - two here! I guess, politely that your other half is not a network expert or specialist? Long, long way from a piece of techno junk. To work with wifi, it does require, as any similar kit would do, a stable and solid environment. Wifi should work well, but without any details, that is likely to be the root of any problem; flaky wifi, diffident connections!
Best course of action is to address your network, if it works reliably, the Nova will have no issue.
Worth noting that “just because everything else works” is not an endorsement of your networks capability, unfortunately. First action is to connect by ethernet patch cable, even as a temporary measure.
